“Can we really afford to lose the next generation of brilliant minds… just because of their supervisors?” AHHHH I love this message so much. Can’t wait to send this video to everyone looking for inspiration and insight to become a better scientific mentor. And to the people who don’t think they need it.

Thank you! There is so much that we need to take a step back and look at. This same thought can/should be used across so many different areas of work.

I experienced having a bad supervisor/teacher during high school, when I used to compete on math and physics Olympics. It was horrible, even though I was acquiring medals and achieving some progress, he would always remind of how x student did better than me or about that one simple mistake I did during a calculation. This man destroyed some years of my life, I had depression during the largest part of my High School years, but I can't blame him since he actually wanted to help me. I wish he was more patient and comprehensive, that would've saved me from some dark years.

Beautifully put. I would add, keeping aspiring scientists away from pharmaceutical, corporate, and political influence so the future of science is free of conflicts of interest, and remains unquestionably objective

Well said..rarely addressed...The trainers..I mean the suprrvisors... must be a holistic persona who knows all dimensions of grooming..A degree without human touch is of no use...In India couple of researchers committed suicide because of harassing supervisors...of course those supervisors are trained by similar supervisors of same schools ..thanks a lot

I didn't bother getting an Engineering degree because the owner of the firm I interned at took me to lunch one day to ask me, "Why do you want to become an Engineer?"

My response was simple, "To improve the world I live in."

He responded with the harsh reality that I would spend my time designing components to fail closer to the end of their warranty period.

He saved me from living a lie.

Thank you Mr. Koontz.

I find relavent purpose in my existence helping people without the influence of "profit margins" and "stockholder's emotions" clouding my judgement.

This comment section is certainly an indicator of intelligence… truely a shame so many cannot think beyond learnt prejudices. Perhaps next time don’t bother watching content containing the words ‘next generation’ if you can’t catch up to the present one…

After all, even scientists could not escape from this persecution.

Stop giving them criminal records for cannabis whilst there in university. The trade offs are significant :) let them experiment and imagine the discoveries
