Portable operating with military style radios

I headed to a local country park to use two of the radios from my collection, the first being the military style Discovery TX-500 HF radio and the other the Racal Cougar PRM-4515. Both radios are built to withstand the roughness of operating in environments like woodlands and clumsiness of the average ham operator... like me.

I'm a licensed amateur radio operator from the United Kingdom. My YouTube channel features videos focusing on operating portable radio from various locations plus how to videos, tutorials, insights and conversations in the hobby.

Love your videos Carl. The way you make them brings back memories of Out Of Town with Jack Hargreaves! Hope to catch you on the bands one day. 73 M3KXZ

I found the same issue with the relatively short mic lead so made up a short extension cable but I also find the output from the speaker mic isn't that great in a noisy (breezy) environment, even in "outdoor" mode so tend to use a headset in such situations.

Hi...love your dedication to radio and your videos are great... I'm seeing a few people laying their antennas completely on the ground... Might be worth giving it a go... All the best M1 bsz... Graham...

Great video Carl. I have to say that you are asking for trouble by bringing the dog on the radio walk, with predictable results. I have a Discovery TX-500 HF radio, and the QRP is a challenge, even with wire dipoles cut to frequency resonance, and without canine companionship, LOL. Keep up the great work!

always enjoy your videos, it takes a lot of effort to remember everything you need and then actually do it. It's a shame that certain receiving stations can be overly critical with your signal report. We, they should be reminded of the amatuer code. /P stations don't generally have 400W into a 3ele yagi at 60ft. I think you did well 😊
