I saw this nice older gentleman on the set of Justin Evans' "Honor Among Thieves" last week, and thought nothing more of it -- until Justin said "you MUST talk to Carl." He was right.

Great interview. I never realized he also wrote and directed Caveman. One of the great guilty pleasure movies of all time. such a fun movie.

Saw Jaws when it was first released in Brooklyn when I was a kid about age of 12 or 13. Quite impressive at the time. One guy walked out of then theater mumbling about "he couldn't take it." Cool interview.

Such a nice interview. Thank you! Jaws 3-D wasn't discussed here but I wonder if it was discussed as you mention Tom and Dick Smothers. The question was asked within a Smothers Brothers FB group - a copy of Carl Gottlieb's screenplay of "Jaws 3D" has a sequence featuring Tom & Dick Smothers performing on a Sea World stage. Was the sequence actually filmed, or did Universal veto the cameo?

I loved Caveman. Hugh - let me guess - it's the G9 that's filming the close-up of Carl. If I'm correct, then I'm convinced it's one of the best and most underrated hybrid cameras out there. If I'm wrong, well it wouldn't be the first time. Anyway, great interview with a real screenwriting pro. I really appreciate the chat.

Just amazing, Hugh. You have incredible interview skills. Was easy to see the respect you held for the man without coming off overly gushy. Whether you already had the knowledge of the man or was a result of study beforehand, the back and forth between you two was so smooth and engaging. I very much look forward to future interviews you do. Thank you!

Such a fantastic interview. I have to admit when he went through his screenplay credits, as much as I love Jaws, and The Jerk, I was most excited to learn he wrote and directed Caveman!

I hope you can do a lot more of these Hugh!

One of my favourite writers (along with Waldo Salt) and such a joy to hear you two muse and discuss the birth of some classic scripts. The history of cinematography and photography is so rich, it's a pleasure to have you guide us through these little snippets of it.

PS I sat through a 2 minute advert for web hosting for this, even
though I've got more squarespace discount codes than I know what to do
with. It was worth every second for this brilliant conversation!

An interesting interview. Of course Jaws and The Jerk are favorites, but I didn’t know Carl. Nice work. Oh wait...sorry Siri. I’m coming. I’m coming.

Good interview, but why is Carl so low in the frame?

Worth the wait! (We had to compensate with the usual high quality gear reviews though...)
Fish movie? LMAO!!!
Well, I guess it takes a self sarcastic creator to ridicule (in a good way) the creation...
Thank you Hugh!
