Understanding Contour Lines

In this video I aim to provide you with a better understanding of the Contour Lines on your map.

These 'squiggly lines' contain an amazing amount of information about the land around you, are present even when the area you are operating in is bleak and desolate but unfortunately they're often overlooked.

Why not take 20 minutes out of your day to bring yourself up to speed on this navigational 'secret weapon'...

1. Watch the video.
2. Grab your gear.
3. Get outside, develop new skills, push your boundaries.

▶ I use a fantastic tool called vidIQ to help me grow this channel.
Seriously, try it out - you'll be glad you did!!!

Nicely explained especially checking the map details as some old maps have the elevation in feet not metres, look forward to further videos on the subject as they make for good learning and revision. Thanks and all the best.

Craig
Thanks for the key. The key to contours. I am trying to learn navigation skills. The lack of knowledge is like being bound by an invisible force field. I would like to try and raise funds for the NHS. Possibly walking coast to coast. They have saved my life twice. So these videos are great. At 68 this year it’s been a bit slow going in. The moorland for me is worrying. So these videos are great and the tip about the contour numerals will make it easier to navigate in my head.
Thanks Craig 🔥

Thanks Craig another brilliant video I didn't know about the difference in spacing on the contour lines and now you have me wondering about the alignment of the numbers, why are some offset?

I never knew that about the numbers reading upright! I can’t imagine the maps in Aus being too different from the ones in the UK

Hi Craig,

I like the way you describe map features and the concept of topography. Stuff I am already extremely familiar with, but excellent delivery nevertheless!

Here in the USA our US Geological Survey maps always have the contour elevation numbers plus or minus 90 degrees from horizontal when reading the map North up.

Thanks for another great video and keep up the great work!

Hi Craig! Very informative video. Unfortunately the tricks don't work for me. The most maps I use, don't tell me in which interval the lines are on the maps. Also, they are all in the same direction. But have nice week, André
