Countryballs - History of Korea
Today there are 2 countries on the Korean peninsula, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South Korea). Nowadays, these two countries speak the same language, have a common culture, as well as history. But how did it happen that one nation became divided into two halves, where in the north reigns totalitarian communism and lagging behind the civilized world, and in the south reigns market economy, where the country is advanced in terms of living standards and technology. To begin with, we should delve into history. Namely to the beginning of the 20th century. At that time, many people tried to conquer the Korean people, first it was the Chinese, then the Russians wanted to colonize the Korean peninsula. However, at the beginning of the 20th century, the Joseon state, the ancestor of Korea, was occupied by the Japanese army. Korea was really a springboard for the Japanese military intervention on the mainland. During the Chinese Civil War, the Japanese Empire occupied Manchuria. With the outbreak of World War II, the Japanese became more active and took. major population centers in China. However, on September 2, Japan signed an act of defeat. After the fall of the Japanese Empire, Korea became independent; at that time, the Cold War was just beginning, so the question arose as to who would get the Korean peninsula. A treaty was signed between the USSR and the USA, according to which the North would go to the Communists and the South would be under the influence of the USA. However, in 1950 the government of North Korea started the war, for a month they occupied the main part of the south, the southerners strengthened in Busan, from where the help of allies came soon. In 1951, the Korean Republican Army knocked out the North Koreans from their territories, and began an offensive on the northern part, driving the Communists to the border of China and the USSR. However, with the help of Soviet and Chinese support, the North Koreans beat back the counterattack of the South Koreans and launched an offensive. In 1953, Korean troops stopped at the present-day border of the countries. A cease-fire was called and peace was signed. The two countries began to develop along opposite paths. The North adopted the ideology of Marxism-Leninism and the South became capitalist.
