The Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992 is Aotearoa New Zealand’s mental health law.

Every 46 minutes, a New Zealander believed to need acute mental health support goes under this law. This could be you, or someone you love.

It’s widely agreed the Mental Health Act needs urgent change – for many reasons, including that it criminalises the people needing mental health support the most.

Help change the Mental Health Act
On 1 October 2024, the Government released a new draft of this law (called the Mental Health Bill) to replace the current Mental Health Act.

No matter who you are – a person who has been under the Mental Health Act, a friend or family member or part of the media – you can influence the Mental Health Act to change for the better by having your say on this law before midnight on Friday, 6 December 2024.

To the Mental Health Foundation, I am so thankful that you are doing changes to the Mental Health Act Law in our country. I agree that changes need to be made. Mental Health I believe are slowly making moves in our the health care system and how Mental Health affects ALL people in all walks of life in our world today. This is no longer made as a person who has a individual Mental Disorder.
I can understand Privacy, in this country, but I also believe every citizen has the right to talk about Mental Health on ALL levels and I believe that medical facilities and healthcare places need to make this a factor in our society today, that Mental Health in itself, is no longer just a personal person's problem or issue, but Mental Health is a societal issue and on a wider scale a World wide issue too.
