In this video, we’re going to talk about human cell anatomy, structure, and function. You can better understand your health and the human body when you understand your cells.
The center of the cell is called the nucleus. The nucleus contains your DNA, a set of instructions that tell the cell what kind of tissue to make, or which actions to perform. The nucleus also contains RNA, which copies the DNA and sends the information to different parts of the cell.
Your DNA and RNA can have over ten thousand errors on any given day, caused by things like radiation, chemicals, and free radical damage. Fortunately, the human cell has repair capabilities that can reduce the errors to one in one billion, decreasing your risk of cancer and other diseases.
The cell has powerhouses or energy factories called mitochondria. They mix your food with oxygen to produce a form of energy called ATP. The endoplasmic reticulum makes protein, lipids (fats), and steroids, and the Golgi apparatus tags proteins and fats to be shipped out to other parts of the body.
The lysosome helps break down cell waste along with damaged parts and recycles them. This process is known as autophagy and is stimulated when you do intermittent fasting. The peroxisome cleans up the peroxides your white blood cells make, so they don’t linger too long in your body after they've done their job.
Lastly, there’s the cell membrane, which is composed of a double layer of fat around the cell. This permits fat-soluble vitamins to penetrate the membrane, go to the nucleus, and affect your body.
