I love these types of videos!! Would love to see a similar concept of carryover in between HSPU and weighted dips too, in your experience did you get the same effect between HSPU and weighted dips?

for those who wondering why: Handstand push up is half rom as the barbell ohp, another factor is that in ohp you pressing with no stretch reflex(meaning you just lift it up without doing a eccentric) which is way harder, like doiing a paused hspu but not going through eccentric, now i hardly believe if you can do a Deficit hspu (collarbone to boxes or pbars ) by entering a shoulderstand first and waiting couple seconds + the weight of your arms which will be depended but lets say 10 kg and almost strict form you will be able to ohp your bodyweight, for example for me as a 65 kg guy that would be a Deficit hspu from shoulderstand + 8 kg with a vest or plates.

PS: i can do 5 strict hspu (just did today!) i can ohp 52.5-55 kg

Hi Paul! I carefully started doing wall HSPUs and core training today for the first time after my mishap. I´m still weak and have to assist myself with a resistance band. though. The pain is still there but it´s getting better day by day. :-)

I did some dumbbell presses today and my frogstand to tucked bent arm handstand felt way lighter. I weigh about 85kg and only did 20kg dumbbell each arm for 5/6 reps. I do think elbows tucked in shoulder press does help a lot with gaining strength!

This is not good news. I weigh 90kg and can only strict press like 60kg for 1rep.
I can lean down to around 86kg and then my body fat is around 10% which is as low as i can maintain.
So only way for me is to up my press and iv been stuck at the same weight for 6mo now :-(

Hi Paul, this is great, I have 2 questions: 1. Would you recommend doing overhead presses to build strength faster or should working on all the various HSPU progressions be enough? 2. Have you ever seen someone being able to do a HSPU that could only lift half their weight in an overhead press?

I'm training my strict press strength to see if it will carry over to the HSPU.

Interesting that you can only strict press 70kg. I thought you would have more in the tank.

Although, some higher reps on the lower weights and some longer rest between sets might have bumped you up to 75-77.5kg, which would be around body weight.

As you mentioned, the HSPU on the floor is partial range compared to the barbell press.

That bottom section is certainly the hardest part of the strict press.

another factor is your feet are bigger than the surface area of palms, also larger support with whole feet and even show cuison reducing some weight doing dubbells military press. handstand pushup is definitely harder than same weight overhead press even with same range of motion, also considering the fact of balance there is no way outrun standing on feet with shoes on reducing some weight.

If you can do 5 deep HSPU
Shouldn’t you be able to do 5 reps with this 70’kg OHP??

Thanks Paul, by that reckoning I only need to press 58 kg to get a HSPU. A pike push up on scales tells me I'm lifting 50kg for 11 reps so 58 is achievable. YEAH!

Great video Paul. Just one question while facing my chest against wall my back arch so when I press with hand when my feet comes up i immediately fall into under balance. Can you give and tips to be straight against back towards wall

I weighted 77kg, and my 1RM overhead press is 75kg, but i can just do 1 to 3 reps hspu...is it my training plan not specific enough for hspu?
