I'm 27. I've been playing Runescape in some form for almost 20 years. Jagex needs to realise that the majority of their playerbase are people like me who have already had their fill and could quite happily walk away from the game and never come back.

Rioting in Fally and making Reddit posts won't do shit. Cancel your membership and don't come back until they change their tone.

The survey did exactly what they hoped it would, it showed them where the line is. A lot of that stuff is coming, just in a mildly dialled back form to what was originally surveyed so for example now when they put ads into f2p they can say "What? You said you didn't want ads if you were paying?".

It's an extremely common tactic employed by companies (and governments): we tell you that you're getting 10 piles of garbage, then pull back when you seem outraged so that when we give you 6 piles of garbage you think "that's not as bad as 10 piles of garbage".

-Add $12 membership with ads
-Increase 'normal' membership price to $18

Corporate language decoder:

“This was originally to be tested in the context of a lower cost ad-supported membership” (after we again increase the cost of membership so that the lower cost memberships with ads are the same price as current ad-free membership).

“We will not include in-game advertisements in any regular paid membership” (but will have them in non-regular lower tier paid memberships).

“While we may explore ads in Free-to-Play (F2P) as a concept in the future, there are no plans for this currently, and we will tread carefully, considering all feedback” (but we will come up with a plan and will add ads as soon as they’re ready).

“We will not be reducing AFK timers for any paid membership from where they are today” (but we will give you the ability to pay more for longer afk timers).

“We will never degrade or fundamentally change the gameplay experience on offer between subscribers” (because our ads are non intrusive and therefore do not change the gameplay experience).

When he said no plans to add ads to "normal membership" but didn't mention getting it from bonds. He is dancing around corporate speak. That type of response is untrustworthy.

Classic door-in-the-face phenomenon. They say something wildly stupid and unreasonable, and then apologize and release a dumbed-down version of that original thing so the community feels like they were heard. Please don't fall for it guys, we shouldn't be paying more and receiving less

Companies have a fiduciary responsibility to their stakeholders which includes not saying and doing things that could unnecessarily jeopardize the value of their investment.

No company on the planet would put out a survey this detailed and comprehensive without careful consideration first. This "Oops we didn't think this through again" excuse is total nonsense, as it always has been.
