Very different bikes. The easiest solution is to own both and this guy knows it very well.

Completely agree with the points raised, I'm in a similar situation, I have 2009 R1200GS which I have used off-road, but is a real handful due to its size, although the throttle can often get you out of trouble, the bike is much more capable than I :). However, I'm even older at 60 so also have had a lighter bike for while, in my case a BMW F650GS single (2000) which is a similar spec to the Himalayan, but doesn't have as good a suspension setup. Hence I'm also looking at swapping the F650GS for the Himalayan.

I have taken the same option as Felix - Keeping my BMW R1200RS SE and purchased a Hanle Black 450 Himalayan. The cost for a new RS would easily excede the price of two RE 450's plus my current bike. Not likely to take either machine off-road except for a campsite grass field but both do the same job for me and add a little variety on a ride across congested uk roads. Agree that many GS riders would be better off road than I would be on the Himalayan.

The Himalayan is better to be compared to the 310gs. Also, i would appreciate it you could review a 310gs if you get the chance. Great video as always. 🎉

Problem with any adventure bike is.... weight.... Years ago I did east Africa .... rutted roads... river crossings... (knee deep)... on a 450 motorcycle.... .... The BMW has plenty of horsepower... but it really isn't useful in rugged off road use... it's large.... bulky .... and as stated if it falls over.... I was in Europe couple months back and saw these BMW's with the big panniers and box all over the place... I'm not a fan of the 450. Himmy .. If I was going " dirt ", , , I'd go with the 411 Himmy.... I prefer air-cooled without possibilities of coolant leaks from either a fall or hose failures... one less thing to worry about.... also if the Himmy falls over.... I can pull it up... 😎

for me, my 1250GS just does 95% of the stuff I need. And I like long trips, few days, 300-500km per day, curvy roads, some white roads and easy offroad. Yes, there were thos 5% cases where I wouldn't dare to go with heavy bike alone, thats why Im looking for second bike to cover that. But even then... Alps are about 800km from my home... how to go there on 300cc dirtbike comfortably, te be able to see those 5% of tacks I missed? Im 50 year old. I want comfort.

I am wondering, how the Himi compares to the GS in terms of the jack of all trades road wise? And for those who want to own/afford only one bike for commuting, travelling, weekend trips. Is the power enough, can you travel it for 6 days in a row with more than 1200 km/day? Cheers
