Mrs. Omawale reached out to students and staff, asking if they would be interested in joining together to do our own version of the viral sensation, "Jerusalema". The response was instant, and in a blink we created a fully produced joyful dance that was shared as a surprise to the lower school students.

"Jerusalema" is a line dance to a gospel-influenced house song by South African DJ and producer Master KG, featuring Nomcebo on vocals. Groups of people the world over participated in the challenge that started in Africa and spread to places like Vietnam, Austria and Jerusalem itself.

In Africa, as with other parts of the world, ceremonial dance tells a story. More than mere entertainment, it recounts history, conveys emotion, celebrates rites of passage, and helps to unify communities.

Thank you, Mrs. Omawale, for sharing your idea, and to the entire cast and crew for creating a joyful bookend to Black History Month. Click on the image below to view the video, and if you find yourself dancing to the beat, send us your selfie videos!
