The costume drama series, Downton Abbey, written and created by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes, stars Academy Award-winner Maggie Smith as a Dowager Countess of an Edwardian English country house in 1912. The series portrays the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who work for them, in a time before the last vestige of a century’s old tradition were stripped away by World War and the modern age. The all-star cast also includes Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern.

Hands down, without question, my favorite line delivered by the great Dame Maggie Smith in the entire series of Downtown Abby. In an interview she stated :" I have been countless films and stage performances and lived a realively quiet life. Since Dowton Abby, I can barely leave my house without someone asking me to say " what is a weekend? " Extraordinary "
Its a great line, but it's a classic Maggie Smith delivery. I was honored to meet her when I was working at the Stratford Festival in Canada in the 1980's. Hilarious in person I must say. My friends dread when they use the word weekend and I interject "What is a weekend " lol.

“What’s a weekend?” is also a valid question for people who work changing shift patterns.

Funny fact. The "weekend" began popping up in English parlance in the late 1800s at the turn of the 20th century.

So this was a relatively new term even in the 1910s. And it makes sense the elderly aristocracy and especially peerage would not really be familiar with the concept.

The best they would know is sabbath or sunday for a day of rest as it is a day for mass generally.

So it isnt just that Granny Grantham hasnt worked a day in her life, its that the weekend as a concept is barely over 100 years old at the time of broadcast in 2011
