Stumbled across this now, and it’s funny to reflect how utterly ready you were to hate this movie, and how much you ended up loving it.

While I'm also a Disney fanatic I have to say I really like this trailer because it really focuses on PL's story not Walt's

The Movie is not about Walt Disney it is about PL Travers and the making of Mary Poppins.

This untold backstory of how Travers' classic work of literature made it to the big screen provides the substance for John Lee Hancock's Saving Mr. Banks.

While Walt Disney plays a large role in this movie, the story is not about Walt Disney it is about the story of Mary Poppin's movie making process

I'm so surprised by this review! I started watching you about a year ago and I've heard you say multiple times saving mr. Banks is one of your favorite films. This review is so antithetical to what you say now (2017). Personally i really liked it. The movie isn't about Disney so i don't think Hanks' performance hurts it at all.

I don't think many people remember specific details about Mr. Disney and his life. They simply know his name and have vague memories of watching the show every Sunday at 6pm before bedtime as a kid.

Do you have any books about Walt Disney that you recommend?

But...she never let go. So if that's the ending of this movie, it's a lie. That would mean that Walt Disney not only hijacking her character, but after her death his studio hijacked her own personal image and put words in her mouth to slap a happy ending on the whole thing.

Walt Disney and PL Travers didn't have a happy ending. She hated him and his movie until the day she died.

So the reviewer doesn't like Tom Hanks as Walt Disney.

Never mind her bollocks - the movie and Mr. Hanks are just brilliant.

I would have LOVED to see a Disney movie where he was planning to build Disneyland, with epcot and all that stuff and just the behind the scenes things we didn't get to see. It would be so fascinating to see how he designed the rides and all those things.. But I think it would be very interesting to see because everyone knows the feud between the author and Walt... It's just a general fact that audiences like to see people fighting with each other over legal issues..

Acting is not always about looking about the person they are playing. It is about capturing the essence. I am really looking forward to this, as an animation artist and former employee of the Walt Disney studios.

Grace could you put links to some of the things you talk about in MMN? like the posters etc :)

You are absolutely right! P.L. Travers and Walt Disney shared an animosity between them that stemmed from the company's "mistreatment" of the production in her eyes. She wasn't even invited to the world premiere of Mary Poppins, she had to ask Walt for permission. Many times they tried to make a sequel, but she was adamant.
The idea that Walt and Travers will just sit down and have this heart-to-heart conversation and everyone becomes friends is WRONG. And its Disney Pictures that's behind this!

I wonder if this movie will have the guts, being made by the Disney company, to tell how Walt didn't even invite PL Travers to the premiere, and that she hated the final movie and Walt Disney so much that she even made sure in her last will and testament that his company would never be able to make another Mary Poppins movie again.

I also wonder if it will portray PL Travers correctly, as she was a bisexual former actress. Don't see shades of that in the trailer...

I agree with the Tom Hanks statement that you said... I think they're trying to portray the public Walt the one that would appear in commercials but I love Emma Thompson in her role! And I have high hopes for the movie but I think it's my disney heart that's most excited because when I watched the latest trailer on TV I cried! I'm going to see it :) thanks Grace for all your honest reviews as always!

The real question is whether or not modern audiences need the actors to look like the original person, or if it is more important for the actor to capture the essence of the characters soul. If Hanks can pull of a convincing Walt, aside from the accent and looks, I think this could be a great film.

Grace, there's something you may have forgotten about Disney, and that is that they love to celebrate anniversaries. The reason I bring this up is because the film Mary Poppins turns 50 next year. This is the beginning of Disney trying to bring Mary Poppins back into pop culture. I wouldn't be surprised if I see this film being released on dvd right alongside the 50th anniversary edition of Mary Poppins.

She didnt say she hates him; just that he was miscast. There are wonderful actors that can be placed in awkward situations because of miscasting.
