Combat patrol should be standardized. Basic infantry, a leader, a medium/light vehicle, and something that's a gimmick to your army.
That way, it really can be a starter box, an intro to the army, or a way to supplement your army all at the same time

It's strange that Spearhead for AoS works so much better as a start collecting and a standalone game. The AoS guys need to send some rulemakers over to 40k.

0:10 That conflation of Start Collecting with Conbat Patrols is so wrong. Start Collecting boxes were amazing and cheaper than Combat Patrol boxes. They got axed around the end of 9th and Combat Patrol boxes have only gone down in the cost savings over the course of 10th edition compared to their 9th edition versions.

Problem with combat patrols is it really seems like they toss poor selling kits in one box to force them down your throat. I enjoy most of them honestly but these newer ones are straight poop.

the ideal combat patrol for me would look like this:
1x-2x standard infantry squad
1x elite infantry squad
1x monster, vehicle, or cavalry
1x generic character or command squad

some combat patrols are or were in this model and they had the "crunch" that jay was talking about. this is what i want out of a combat patrol but because its GW we won't get anything like this

As someone who has been sorta putting off hopping into the hobby and finally decided to hop in and start painting, the new guard combat patrol just kinda makes me regret not getting to old one when it was out. Like I know a lot of people have said that the old guard patrol with the sentinel wasn't very good, but this new one just feels like an insult to the old one. At least you could army build with the old one with the shock troop squads it gave you, and the sentinel and arty pieces looked cool. Its like GW threw out whatever redeeming qualities the old one had and replaced them with a bunch of horses no one wants.

7:50 when I buy a chaos marine box, I want it to be mostly chaos marines. Not 30 fucking zombies and 8 chaos marines

Personally I think every combat patrol should have

-A leader
-Basic infantry for your army
-Some sort of small special unit
-A larger model that can serve as a centrepiece to your combat patrol

Honestly if I was to recommend a combat patrol to a beginner. Someone who also wants to specifically play the combat patrol game I’d recommend necrons. That box is perfect.

With the Deathguard combat patrol, Typhus can only bring back poxwalkers in 40k, in combat patrol he loses that ability, just for clarification :)

Death Guard Combat Patrol was the first I bought after getting back into painting 25 years after my last model. And I had an absolute blast painting it.

9:14 You are crazy and high if you think the Deathguard box is a good Combat Patrol.

These are starter boxes! They should come with variety, and be a good core to any army. The DG box has a specific named character (not for everyone) and all infantry. Not only that but it has more poxwalkers than can be fielded as per the rules. And there’s no fun bigger mini to be an eye catching centerpiece. Tyranids and Necrons get this right. Mostly standard infantry, a generic HQ, and a fun large mini.

Sadly most combat patrol boxes were best back in the old start collecting! days, and get worse with each refresh.

Combat Patrol doesn’t seem to have “Start Collecting “ in mind anymore. Like Spearhead, it’s simply meant to be a stand alone game/product so impact on 40k doesn’t matter. Which is sad but the only justification I can’t think of for how they are put together now.

3 of those Necron Combat Patrols built my army. Very happy with it!

12:53 The Ork Combat Patrol refresh is Beast Snagga Boys and Squig Hog Boys. It's a decent kit.

Games workshop needs to do a few things to make the format work:

1) make the game actually balanced and fun at 500pts

2) sell 500pt starter sets, allowing different factions to cost different amounts. Let horde armies be hordes and elite armies be elite.

3) make the boxes feel like small representations of the army. They should be all cliche units. Don’t try to be clever or dump older/less popular units.

Kinda feel like GW throw Horses into these discount boxes as no one buys them outside of the boxes

Honestly, I think named characters shouldn't be in combat patrols. If you're using these to start your army, why immediately start with a named character? It also forces anyone who wants that character to buy the combat patrol as well as people who already have the character to buy them again if they want the combat patrol.
