Imagine a big, relentlessly cheerful sheep dog who loves you completely. That was Paul's dog Martha.

I love both songs. The Beatles tried so many different sounds, you can spot their influence in so many different directions through the following years. Great review! Always happy when The Beatles return.

MMD is one of my favorite McCartney tunes. I taught myself that great opening piano part--and still play it often.

MMD is one of my favorite Beatles tracks. Great playing, chord progression, melody, arrangement, and singing. I especially like how McCartney jumps between his head voice and falsetto almost seamlessly.

Martha My Dear was an exercise in Paul’s sheer determination to get something just right. He initially couldn’t quite get his fingers around the piano riff he wanted and George Martin suggested he give it a go (although Paul had been able to play piano since being a kid, it was Martin who played any piano parts on their earliest songs). But Paul being Paul, he was like, “No, I’ve damn well got this.” And he did. Brilliantly. It actually gave him the confidence to write significantly more piano-based tracks and his piano playing came on leaps and bounds.

The reason that 'I'm So Tired' is underrated is that there are so many other gems on this record. What would have been the second single on most other artists' albums is buried on side 2 here. Some people prefer to carp about Revolution 9 or Wild Honey Pie than acknowledge that there at least a dozen (and I would make a case for all 30 in their own way) pop/rock classics to enjoy.

Paul's Piano playing on 'Martha' is fantastic, I heard he started it as an exercise to see if he could play at a higher level. John's 'Tired' is also classic.

I find "Martha My Dear" really successful with its beautiful convoluted melody and its elaborate orchestral arrangements, on the other hand I have never been too attracted by "I'm So Tired" which is not bad at all but which does not speak to me more than that. I preferred "I'm Only Sleeping" on Revolver.

'Martha My Dear' is one of those songs that John derided as Paul's 'Granny music', but it's yet another example of his mastery of melody - he just makes it sound so darned simple that people mistake his artistry for shallowness. No evidence, or confirmation at all that the song is about Jane. The full Wikipedia sentence that Justin read from, said "it has been interpreted as...". The short answer is that Paul wrote it as a writing exercise and used the name of his beloved Old English Sheepdog, Martha to fill out the words. Full answer - in 1997, Paul revealed that Martha had been the inspiration behind the song “Martha My Dear” and that it was not a message of love to Jane Asher, who McCartney intended to marry in 1968 and who many listeners thought the song was actually about. It’s a communication of some sort of affection but in a slightly abstract way, McCartney said. ‘You silly girl, look what you’ve done, ’ all that sort of stuff. These songs grow. Whereas it would appear to anybody else to be a song to a girl called Martha, it’s actually a dog, and our relationship was platonic, believe me.” Paul also said: “When I taught myself piano I liked to see how far I could go, and this started life almost as a piece you’d learn as a piano lesson. It’s quite hard for me to play, it’s a two-handed thing, like a little set piece. In fact I remember one or two people being surprised that I’d played it because it’s slightly above my level or competence really, but I wrote it as that, something a bit more complex for me to play. Then while I was blocking out words – you just mouth out sounds and some things come – I found the words ‘Martha My Dear‘.”

A lot of people criticize this record because it is so eclectic and mostly single personalities. But I love it because of the opposite: they cut loose and are intensely creative and innovative. And teh quality remains impeccable. Still top tier 50+ years later.

I'm sure I've heard that Martha My Dear was a reference to McCartney's dog.
I'm So Tired is one of my favourite songs on the album. I know what you mean about the quiet to loud grunge-like feel but Kurt Cobain was a big Beatles fan so perhaps it's not surprising.

Thanks again for letting us eavesdrop on your Beatle reactions. 'Martha' has such a happy vibe to it. I happen to love Paul's granny music - he always included it someplace ('You gave me the Answer'). As an insomniac, I can relate to 'I'm So Tired', especially the Walter Raleigh line. Nice job investigating, and have a great weekend!

Believe it or not, "Martha My Dear" was inspired by McCartney's dog Martha. And Kurt Cobain was hugely inspired by the Beatles, and especially Lennon. You can hear it most clearly in songs like "About a Girl", which could have come straight off "Rubber Soul" or "Help!" I'm a little surprised you didn't know about Sir Walter Raleigh - the city of Raleigh NC is named after him.

Playing in the 90s I saw I’m so Tired covered by a few types of bands. Punk, Shoegaze, Singer Songwriter. We did Tomorrow Never Knows.

I've always held I'm So Tired as a throwaway. You've made me take a new look at it - yes, I've underrated it, it's quite better than I thought. Early impressions can last, and still clog listens decades later, with expanded tastes. Nowhere near a favorite on these golden platters for me, but I'll never skip it again - thanks.

'Martha' is a pleasant ditty, inoffensive, good elevator music. Paul pissed off the other band members for leaving them out of several recordings for this album. I prefer John and George's songs for allowing the other to contribute, I think it makes for better songs.
'I'm So Tired' is a favorite of mine, yes it's underrated. Lennon showed off his vocal range well and his lyrics are fun. His tired mind wandered off on Sir Walter Raleigh. His mood meanders too, from being lazy to working himself into a frenzy. Brilliant.

Great stuff from two brilliant songwriters. Maybe the meditation amplified their differences a bit, I like it!
Pre-grunge, noice.
Pressure creates diamonds… the Diamond album then…

Paul wrote ‘Martha My Dear’ for his famous sheep dog, Martha!
