In looking for a whole house smart energy monitor, we came across the Emporia Vue. It's cost and simplicity made sense. So we grabbed one on Amazon:

The install is involves digging deep into the electrical panel - a potential dangerous job best left to electricians. And electrician could install this in 30 minutes. But the app is a dream to use with lots of real time electrical usage data reported to the user in multiple ways. With a wifi connection and the app on your cell phone, you can access the continually updated real time information at home, in town or across the world.

The system works through a monitor (provided) into which a variety of electrical energy sensing clamps are plugged The clamps go around individual wires / circuits and continual monitor the electricity coming into the house as well as the usage of any circuit that has a clamp on it. Some circuits use very little energy, which items such as HVAC systems gobble it away. The monitors pinpoints how much and how often energy is consumed and spits out the data to seconds, minutes, days, weeks years etc...

The app also provide notifications to users regard unusual changes of stoppages in electrical activity.

Your not kidding electric kills.
My brother who is a deputy was called out for an emergency to a home. The wife had called and said something happened while her husband went up into the attic- this by the way was another deputy's home. He went up into the attic and there he was, my brother's work friend had hit a live wire somehow up in there and electricuted himself.
It was never clear- was he hammering up there, touch a live wire, or doing home improvement himself up in that attic. Either way, it was sad- he was a young dad.
Please, you cannot stress enough- do not try and play with electricity yourself, call a professional- it couuld save your life if you do not know what you are doing.
