I paid a Best Buy to build me a new gaming PC and it actually went way better than I expected, until the CPU fell...

So I made a couple mistakes 😂 The hub on the back of the case is an RGB hub and can't actually support fans.
Also, I tried twisting the cooler to help dislodge the CPU, but the thermal paste was like glue and I couldn't. That poor CPU...

Geek Squad: He paid for the whole paste tube, he's getting the whole tube.

Former Geek Squad manager here. Your build experience will vary a TON by store. Generally I would just tell my Agents that we didn't do full builds (it's not a service corporate officially has us offer.) When we did do it, I would review and test it myself before I okayed the pickup, since custom builds can lead to a lot of weird issues.
A lot of stores will carry the parts for a full build, not sure why yours didn't.
We also didn't have a SKU that actually covered the scope of work for a full build, and we use specific closing codes to allot our hours that gets compared to what's charged at the register.

I probably would have charged you $150 in labor for the one time build and left it at that, but put you towards the bottom of the priority list due to time involved (and explained that to you beforehand).
We often only had one actual Repair Agent onsite at a time, who would be juggling a dozen or so computers, so fitting in the time for a custom build with our limited hours was never easy.
That's all mostly at corporate, but just some behind the scenes for you.

Best Buy employee here. Apparently building computers is no longer a required service that Geek Squad offers, and it varies from store to store if they want to offer it. Their reasoning for that is that it cost too much to require everyone to get the proper training. My store doesn't offer it anymore, so I build computers on the side now. However, I found the old training guides and I learned that putting more storage that is actually requested is commonplace, in order to make it "future-proof".

As a Geek Squad agent I found this highly entertaining well done.

"youl need to supply the graphics card yourself" ah yes completly defeated the purpose of me wanting to get someone to build me a pc. it was because i cant fokin get a gpu without 3 to 4 times inflated price for previous gen gpus

I'm impressed that they made the system look decent. I suspect the geek that assembled it hasn't had their soul sucked out yet.

the “fan” hub wasn’t actually a fan hub it’s only an rgb hub so they did it properly

That Windows pricing is insanity. I built my first PC a few months ago and paid like $20 for a Windows 10 Pro key and installed it myself.

Thermal paste is pre-applied on the Ryzen coolers, so clearly the Geek Squad expert decided that wasn’t enough and added even more.

One thing I do to avoid pulling the CPU and cooler out at the same time is run prime95 for 15 minutes, then shut down and remove the cooler. This helps soften the thermal paste by heating it up and reduces the chance of you pulling the cpu out too. Although with this much thermal paste, I question if there was any way of avoiding it!

The thermal paste thing is worse when you realize the wraith cooler comes with thermal past on it 😂

The Verge "There's not enough thermal paste on that CPU"

The Verge would be proud of Geeksquad to see that much thermal paste.

"How much does this build weigh?"
"About 900 Canadian pounds."

As someone who works for Geek Squad I am embarrassed about the amount of thermal paste added. WTF?! In my store we do not do what they did.
