In this video I am doing a little microphone shootout. I am testing my Coles 4038 against my AKG c451b. I use them both as a drum overheads and for acoustic guitar.
Let me know in the comments which one you like better.

Great snappy drumming. I think both mic's have their place. I like the idea of co-locating the two mic's, pointed at the same spot, and recording both. Instead of getting spatial diversity, you get sonic / tonal diversity between two very different mic's. They will be in phase, and you can mix them however you wish. No need to negotiate two different placements / orientations, either. I have been doing this lately, with excellent results. Great video, thanks !

thanks for being clear about the entire signal path... it's so important in these videos and a lot of people dont mention things like converters or preamps

Really a great video!! Both are very nice mics, and very different...as you said. ;)
Both are great and hold there place in the artistic space the artist needs.
Loved this video bro!! Also, really nice feel on the acoustic guitar...really cool to hear you play!!

At first listen the AKGs blew away the coles. the coles sounded flat and dark. Then I turned up the treble on my pa system for the coles and i am blown away. The coles have a definition and 3d quality to the top end that the AGKs can't touch. you just gotta turn up the treble. Im sold on the coles. Thanks for the video!!

Most people listening to this will choose the AKG, then spend years wondering why their mixes sound harsh, boring and "digital". After a decade of trying to find "smooth" condensers, you will embrace the Grail that is ribbon microphones and eventually, if you're lucky, accept the Coles 4038 as your savior, the God Microphone, of which there can be none greater.

I think Ash Soan uses the Coles as Overheads. Both sound great imo.

Hi! I just bought an used 451 and I'm trying to find out if it really is original and not a fake. Does yours come with black "printed" istead of engraved symbols and such? And... Does the xlr input has any markings that could be used to spot a fake one?

Thanks for this nice review! I know that finally it is matter of taste, but for me AKG microphone has a much better defined over all sound. By my ears, with AKG, cymbals (HI hat, ride, crash) sounds way better, closer to the live sound, and the rest of kit is liitle bit sharper than with 4038. With 4038 toms and snare are little bit mellowed, kind of softened, and cymbals definitely sound way dampened for me. Same opinion for guitar, AKG has better Hi tones and sarp overall, and 4038-sounds mellowed overall.

the best way is to use dedicated ribbon pre, which have input impedance from 24 to 33k. The GAP is an excellent pre, but with a too low, for the purpose, in[ut impedance

For Studio/Drums Only = Coles
For Live/Bandroom/Recordings = aks

AKG has better definition (especially on drums) imo.

These are 2 entirely different microphones one is a ribbon which are dark, the other a known bright condensor, why in the hell would you do a shoot out with 2 entirely different mics? These stupid shoot out videos are rediculous!
