100% of the west coast timber fallers, including me, would consider this to be dangerous as hell.

I'll bet your jobs look pretty tidy at the end. We have chains on our skidder, which helps to eliminate some tops, but the low stump is the sign of a conscience logger.

Nice job at getting it good and low to the ground. A trick I learned from an ol' timer, when having to stack wedges, is to make a second cut about an inch or so directly above the first cut thats already wedged, then put your second wedge in that cut, as soon as you cut in enough to get the wedge in, and then start cutting in behind the wedge, the rest of the way to the hinge, either stopping periodically to drive the wedge or having someone drive the wedge while your cutting to the hinge. It helps a lot with not having to worry about a wedge coming out, or out of alignment. You can go all the way around that cut with wedges just like the first cut. I've seen him fell one that was leaning hard the opposite direction by doing that. He'd go up to 3 cuts, stacked right on top of each other, with wedges going all the way around each cut just like you stack em, but with a little meat between each wedge to keep a good bite on em. It's not for every situation, but it was a nice trick to add to the arsenal. Them ol' timers always have something new up their sleeve

Finally someone that cuts a small notch. I learned from an oldskool logger and he always cut small notches

How do you keep it from kicking back when you start boring ? Certain bar maybe ?

Gotta be expecting it to slide back that way though, back over the stump! Didn't see what you did for 'cutting the hinge off' at the front.

Is that white oak? Your hinge greatly depends on type?

Just curious

Any guess as to how much weight/percentage of a tree can be manipulated with these strategies/techniques?

I’m no lumberjack, but that’s a lot shim. I can only assume you tipped the top of that tree a couple feet before it fell, no?

Great teachings.

I'd be fired and blacklisted instantly for tipping a tree like that. That's dangerous AF

Nice and neat! How do you know when the tree is going to come back towards you?

So much here that they taught us NEVER to do. Don't follow this guy's example. That is if you value your life.

So why didn't you make the wedge deeper? Make the back cut alittle higher than the noch. Put a wedge in the back cut and off it goes.

Nice I cut the same quite often Nice cut and wood!

Yes it's a dangerous cut and I never did it intentionally. But still, it might be the least dangerous procedure when selective felling in a dense hardwood stand where you know the cut tree will hang. And you want to avoid tearing from a too thick hinge. You might be on to smtgh Good.Fellers

Like how low you cut the tree down. No a hight stump like a lot of people do
