An awesome program was released the other day that lets you change the internal firmware on each Joy-Con to show up as any color on the Nintendo Switch. This is a great finishing touch for anyone who has painted or changed the shell on their Joy-Con controllers.

I can't guarantee how this modification will affect your Joy-Con in the eyes of Nintendo. This is mostly a hex edit that shouldn't get you banned from online activity, but I can't guarantee that. Know that you are doing this at your own risk, Thanks!

I did this to my gray ones. I made them solid black with white buttons so I could easily identify them after playing with friends, that way I didn't have to mark them physically in any way.

That is an awesome way of preventing you from mixing up your Joycons with friends

YESSS! This is exactly what I needed. I really wanted purple and yellow joycons but too expensive to get individually so bought drift damaged grey, fixed the drift, bought purple and yellow shells and saved myself about £100 in the process. Then realised the image on the switch still showed old colour and it was like all my hard work was undone, then I saw this! My job is now complete!

This was extremely helpful. In order to get the backup to stop crashing I had to uninstall and reinstall the Visual C++ redist (x64 and x86) a few times. After that it worked fine. Now my Joy-Cons are gold to match my whole Famicom situation.

For people who keep asking if this voids the warranty, this is directly lifted from the Switch's Warranty statement (UK/AU/NZ version):
"This warranty does not cover... the Product if it has been opened, modified or repaired by any person or company other than Nintendo or its authorised partners, or if the Product has its serial number altered, defaced or removed;"

Modified in this case includes altering firmware, so proceed at your own risk.

I feel like instead of dmca-ing this(like Nintendo always does) Nintendo should hire the guy who made this and integrate in to the settings on the switch

I wondered when I got my Splatoon bundle how it stored this information. Now I know it's a very straightforward method to color code each one. This is incredible planning on Nintendo's part. Kudos to the Nintendo engineer who had the foresight for a seemingly small detail and kudos to the consumer who discovered this feature and found a way to utilize it.

"let's make it hot pink, we would expect that"

Thank you for giving credit to the software dev. So many people will just make a how-to without giving credit.

Deep down inside we all know that hot pink is a real man's color.

Wow was researching how to customize joycons and it just so happens spawnwave was 4 years ahead of me nice to see the progress he's been through 👍

This is so straight forward! I just swapped my shells to Atomic Purple from the yellow purple set so this should be exciting!!

Does no one get what this is for? As he said in the video. It is so you can match the colour of your joycon with the colour you painted it with! It is not pointless. It's a nice thing for modders

Wow! All these years later and this still works! You saved my joy con! I bought hall effects sticks for my green joy cons since they were drifting and when replacing the sticks I noticed the battery on the left one had inflated so I pulled the battery out but ended up breaking the connector on the board. Couldn't find another green left joy con so I bought a refurb from Nintendo and swapped everything out to the green shell. I FORGOT the color thing and it was super bugging me to the point I was about to try and find another $80 pair to replace this with but then remember this video from all those years back. AND IT STILL WORKS! Awesome stuff!

I think what's interesting is that it seems to suggest that future joycons might actually have different colored buttons/joysticks just like the Zacian/Zamazenta edition.
