The Untold Story of Africa's Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic

In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, H.E. Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa and then Chairperson of the African Union, created the AU COVID-19 Africa Vaccine Acquisition Task Team (AVATT). This initiative, led by Strive Masiyiwa, Dr. John Nkengasong, and Dr Vera Songwe and supported by Afreximbank, successfully secured 400 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine for Africa, marking the continent’s first pooled vaccine procurement of such scale.
