As a photographer from just outside San Francisco, I *love* shooting in overcast conditions. It's particularly great for black and white work. I just came back from Moss Landing last week and several of my studies of sea birds look like Chinese ink paintings!

Don't diss the light you get, learn to use it for what it gifts you.

Thanks, as always, for the content.

Awesome topic Henry. I think as I mature, both as a person and as a photographer, I have come to appreciate mood. When I look for an image to capture, and when I sort through images in post, my first emotional reaction to the image carries the most weight, driving each process. Also, when I look at my images #lakelightimages that get the most attention on social media, the ones that instill certain moods are the ones that people react to. Everyone sees bright sunsets as common, but the soft, solemn, calm, misty mornings are the most beloved. Clouds, and the light they filter for you, play a key role in creating certain moods.

A lazy Sunday evening. Cup of tea. Watching Henry Turner in the Lakes. Just the ticket. Great shot.
I know what you mean about the flat overcast skies. Someone once described it to me as "living inside Tupperware".
By the way, I now live near the Canadian Rockies, and I see what you mean about the comparison with Thirlmere - at lower elevations.

It's lovely to see a less well known part of the Lake District being explored and appreciated .

I love your enthusiasm - got me inspired to leave the house pre-dawn and have a day at Arnside, catching the tidal bore

"All those lovely whites, greys, blacks great textures we can work with in the sky", then you wipe it out on a mega long exposure. I love LE's but something I find I seem to do more often is take the 1/40th exposure and blend the sky with the LE water or even experiment, leave the LE sky and do a 25-50% blend of the normally exposed sky over the top. Before you say ahhh that's not my style of photography, well you've created the 15 minute LE that isn't just a recording of a well sort out composition, you've created the image in your head then used your tools to bring that piece you imagined to life. Great video again, I watch every one, superb images although I have to say you make woodland photography look so easy. Me I struggle to see anything other than clutter when I've tried.

You're right about the two different overcast days. Those dismal flat layers of cloud, with no shapes of contrast, simply act as a natural softbox. The other overcast days, like you describe, with epic textured clouds, can create truly dramatic skies. Those are epic and even better if shooting black and white!

Nope nothing like the rockies where I live but nice non the less. I liked your first image. It shows what I always say. Look at what is in the image that catches your eye. If you take the shot with a phone you are disappointed as all the green is around the subject. By zooming in you get the subject isolation. Then you have the image you want. Great work as always Henry.

I'm from Vancouver Island on Canada's west coast and I definitely see some similarities to our beautiful landscape. Love your long exposure image!

Nice long exposure Henry, . You made the right choice because I tried walking up that hill and gave up as it was too steep.

Great vlog as always Henry. Superb LE image. I too love an overcast sky but LE doesn't tend to do it too well. Keep the vlogs coming!!
