In the original conversation Toranaga ask Blackthorne what his business is with the Dutch that enlisted him. To which Blackthorne answers that he helps them in their fight against their Spanish masters (Dutch 80 year war of independence). Toranaga then says that it is a crime to revolt against your master. "Not unless you win" is Blackthorns reply. Queue grin response from Toranaga, as he is plotting to do exactly the same.

The scene must be watched in the context of the entire series. However the writers have crystallized an entire focal point of history until a few minutes and Shogun. The ramifications they spoke about in the scene echo across the centuries to this day. It is a perfect masterpiece of acting directing and writing. Astonishing and brilliance Don't begin to tell the whole story.

This is altered and shortened, and it absolutely butchered the scene. The response doesn't even make sense.

It's written that blackthorn wants help...he is told that him fighting against the Portuguese violates their treaty that he just told them about and Blackthorn would be charged by Spain for violating the pact. The "unless I win" was saying "i understand that both nations do not want me to do this you, but if by some miracle we can do this, I could potentially change the way both sides look at and enforce the treaty in Japan. That concept being completely lost in this scene is an absolute failure on the part of the show runners. I understand that they didn't want a ten minutes exposition dump, but that concept of the treaty violation was the beating heart of the scene
