You don’t know who you are until you’ve read Diary of a Wimpy Kid II : Rodrick Rules

Unfortunately, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival has gone woke, and all they have is Black actors in unknown plays

1984 and Animal Farm are up there to.

Also agree with the Bible, despite being a committed Atheist.

I'd also include The Communist Manifesto, for the same reason an Atheist recommends reading the Bible ;)

Crime and Punishment is actually a pretty easy read

Anything from Thomas Sowell, Walter E Williams, and Larry Elder will do for your social political skills.

Anything from Henry Hazlitt, Milton Friedman, David Friedman, Murray Rothbard, etc for your economics skills.

I'm a Mark Twain fan. Try Letters from the Earth!

Summary:

* Some Shakespeare, at least watch a play of some of his great tragedies (e.g. Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear).

* Crime and Punishment (Dostoevsky). Get the Oliver Ready translation or the Michael Katz translation. Both are excellent and superior to Pevear and Volokhonsky as well as Constance Garnett.

* Bible. At least read the Gospels. Not for religious reasons but because the Bible influenced so much of our society and culture.

War and Peace, Anna Karenina, The Idiot, The Grapes of Wrath, The Pearl, A Tale of Two Cities, Stranger in a Strange Land, A Good Man Is Hard to Find, Wise Blood, A Confederacy of Dunces, and so many more. Just start reading and don’t stop.

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. These are my must read books. If only I had read them as a young person, when I had enough energy to have helped me.

People should just read, period. Atleast occasionally. It's a medium where you can appreciate the storytelling like when you watch a movie or show, but it's also mental exercise, if physically reading is a hurdle, try audiobooks

I’ll just wait for the Netflix adaptation of Hamlet where he is cast as an LGBT woman of color.

Joking aside, the most popular book in the Roman Empire was the Iliad and the most popular book since then was the Bible. Read those two books and you’ll understand the foundations of Western Civilization.

I would say that one should also read or at least obtain knowledge of Islam and how its views and leaders helped shaped the Western world. Listen despite the negatives a person can leverage at Islam especially modern followers one thing that can’t be denied is how its followers and leaders helped shape the Western world. I would say the same to a person living in the Middle East about christianity and how it shaped their existence etc.

Bro forget whatever you just heard read whatever you enjoy. Outside of school you do not need to read anything you don’t want to.
Except captain underpants. It’s required.

I don't agree to having to read the bible, but I would say reading the Tanakh is just fine as it includes everything necessary to understand how we get modern American law

Can anyone explain why thirteen percent of our population has airtime and mass media exposure of 90 percent?

W. Somerset Maughan, " Many a Summer Comes the Swan". The ability to live forever is a tragedy.
The bible is a waste of time? The old testament is a waste of time other than a history lesson. Jesus said I am the new covenant, IE: that which came before no longer pertains to the Son of God and his relationship with you! He died for the sins of everyone, not just the Jews, or Romans, or Egyptians, or slaves, or freemen but all. Free your mind and God will free your soul through the sacrifice of himself through his son. What could be more painful than to watch his son be condemned like a common criminal, scourged, tortured, mocked, spit upon and then crucified with nails driven through his hands and feet to suffer while people mocked my only son in painful torture till he expired?
