“Sound of Music” will always be close to my heart. My mom introduced me to the movie when I was only six and I became completely obsessed with it, and still am today

"The Sound of Music" has to be one of the most memorable openings. Apparently, the camera knocked Julie Andrews down a few times, but she continued on like a true professional.

I hope that animated movies get a list of their own, because “Belle” should definitely be on here

I am shocked RENT wasn't included. Starting with Seasons is heartbreakingly good.

The Greatest Show from The Greatest Showman and Honey Honey from Mamma Mia are also amazing for setting the tone of the movie and draws you in. Seeing how movie musicals these days are a hit or miss, these two kind of gave me the assurance of “ooo it’s going to be good”

Just hearing the opening from Sound of Music still gives me goosebumps. So beautiful.

I'm a dork and I know Joel Schumacher rightly gets dragged but the intro number of Phantom of the Opera always gets my heart racing, with the stage torches flourishing to life and the Opera Populáire itself rousing from dusty, cobwebbed slumber with that immortal soundtrack will always be a definitive opening song for me.

Some people might eye roll but What Time Is It from High School Musical 2 is iconic!

I'm surprised the Rocky Horror Picture Show wasn't on the list. It's one of my favorite opening movie songs.

Grease is the word.. I remember seeing the opening number for the first time in a theater.. Extremely catchy tune, with great animation filled with quick cuts..a feast for the eyes and ears..and West Side Story..from the overhead shots of NYC moving into the snapping fingers..chills.

"Look Down" and "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" really draw you into the spirit of their shows, and you can guarantee that I'll immediately start singing along!

These opening songs in movie musicals have certainly made a positive impact all around. We ought to see these actors excel further in their careers.

"Grease Is The Word" from Grease is a guilty pleasure of mine and is the only musical I got into as a kid. It came out a year before I was born.

I absolutely agree with your number one pick. Ever since I saw the original West Side Story as a child in 1961 it has always been my favorite movie of all time. Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and Jerome Robbins were the greatest representing music, lyrics and choreography. George Chakiris and Russ Tamblyn were amazing as well as all of the Jets and Sharks with their dancing, tumbling and finger snapping. It was true genius. I've seen the movie at least a hundred times and the talent involved in the whole production never ceases to amaze me. Great choice for number one. The new version does not come near in comparison to the original.

All That Jazz also introduces the central conceit of the film, which is that all the musical numbers are going on in Roxie's head.

The Greatest Showman opening should be on the list. It's an amazing and quite an energetic way of starting a movie musical

Back to School from Grease 2 is definitely a favorite.
And I can’t believe y’all didn’t have Little Shop of Horrors 😭

From the first iconic note that leads into the
opening song, A Hard Day’s Night definitely fits this category.
