Ibram X. Kendi on how Toni Morrison influenced his writing

Ibram X. Kendi discusses his personal journey and the decision to write a chapter of his book titled "Color," exploring the subject of colorism and internalized racism within communities of color. "Toni Morrison, like any sort of black writer living, had a tremendous impact on my life, in my personal life, let alone my literary life," he says. Morrison, the literary giant and prolific writer, explores similar themes in her first book "The Bluest Eye." Kendi says Morrison's book was instrumental in writing the chapter because of her instruction "to not write with the white critic on our shoulders, to not write with the white gaze in our minds."

The colorism/lighter skin thing exists in east asia and india too. Clearly its something to do with white media yes, but I wonder if its somehow innate too, or at least something to do with class (working outside giving you darker skin/lighter skin being a sign of wealth or refinement etc.). It must come from somwehere, it exists in so many places. Could it be psychological, anthropological?
