I stayed in a business hotel in mito for $27 a night Agoda seems to lower the price the same day at about 2-3pm. It came with a free beer at check-in and breakfast too.

Ryokan is not for solo travelers at all times, back in 2010 I tried booking during sakura season and was told it wasn't available.

There are also places you can rent that are renovated old style houses called town houses. They look amazing inside.

Actually shared houses are pretty much similar to hostels, they're cheap and shared with other occupants.. think you can stay for short stay too. I had rented an apartment for a month and the company renting the apartment let me stay one night in a shared house since they had to disconnect stuff and give me back my key money. Met some Japanese that came back from overseas study both of them lol

I have stayed at business hotels. They are perfect. Clean, comfortable, convenient. I have also stayed at the 9hrs capsule hotel in Shin-okubo. I was there there for two weeks and loved it.

I found airbnb to be the best option when I was there. Also went to a business class hotel which was fine. as well, as I don't need much room and only a place to sleep. I didn't like the capsule hotel because you can hear all of the noises from everyone else like snoring and farting. If you are a light sleeper I would recommend something more private.

Check the internet before bringing pets overseas. Some countries have different restrictions.
