With the emergence of buzzworthy technologies like ChatGPT and the prolonged prominence of artificial intelligence, a pertinent query arises: Can artificial intelligence effectively take the place of medical coders in the healthcare industry?

I am an AI student, and I am going to make a potentially controversial comment. All these AI tools are based on underlying algorithms of some sort. If the algorithms are not trained on the data from a particular doctor's medical records, then the algorithms will not be able to pick up on those nuances of a particular doctor's recordkeeping, although a medical coder working on this doctor's files regularly might. Likewise, for rare medical conditions, there may be insufficient cases in the training data for the AI algorithms to gain enough information to identify such cases correctly. A human medical coder may be able to identify a first case of some medical condition much more readily. When new codes are added - such as codes for the different COVID-19 vaccinations maybe - a human coder may also be more able to correctly code such cases too. As an outsider looking in, I do wonder if the use of AI in medical coding could be better suited to aspects like quality control rather than the initial coding, so that those medical records where the first medical coder and the AI software recommend different codes are prioritized for review, but clinical coding staff are not slowed down by dealing with incorrect system-generated codes. I also fully expect that a lot of everyday Australians have no idea about the ways in which their medical records are processed, and I am thoroughly convinced that the clinical coding profession requires very specific and highly specialized skills of which those outside the industry generally have no appreciation or understanding. You all most definitely have my respect.

This was really great information. I’ve been a coder/biller for nearly a decade. I agree it would be beneficial to automate the monotonous parts of coding in order to free up time for more complex cases. The big downside is (and this really applies to every industry) we are eliminating nearly every entry level job, which is going to make it exceptionally more difficult for anyone trying to get into the workforce.

I am asked this by many that see me preparing to take my CPC Certification Exam..."do you think AI will replace your job as a Medical Coder".

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if new coders are entirely unable to find jobs after 2030. You would just need to have experienced coders and auditors verify what the AI program does

It's phenomenal seeing how AI may be used in medical coding! Even though it might automate repetitive operations, human programmers must still supervise and validate the process. Have you looked into systems that combine AI and human knowledge, such as SmythOS? Collaboration is in store for the future!

Where do we get clients as a medical coder working remotely? Nice content tho! New subscriber here.

I tried to code using chat gpt and accuracy is less than 20%😂
It was unable to provide multiple and combinations codes
It's just giving a single word direct disorder code

in our cpmpany they alteady tried. we even trained the AI. that was in 2016. but eventually the company gave up lol. the AI can just highlight the keywords and rely on it. It does not have critical thinking and it cannot dissect medical records. so medical coding is still safe at least in the near future.

This video and most of these comments are useless. Effective coding maximizes reimbursement, and that requires complex human reasoning to recognize not only what is being communicated in a medical record, but what is missing. AI is nowhere close to capable of replacing the ability of a human to abstract information from a complete medical record. AI will do absolutely NO MORE to replace human coders than the computer did itself when it replaced typewriters. It may serve as a nice tool in limited circumstances, like the computer itself, but it will not replace human skills.
