Is The East African Federation Inevitable?

In recent years the proposed establishment of a union state between the East African countries of Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi has sparked interest among geopolitics spectators, some of whom have begun to call this future country the first African Superpower, but now plans have changed, and new additions to the proposed federation have been made with the inclusion of the South Sudan and Democratic Republic of the Congo, which some of the original members have taken issue with. Additional cracks have begun to form and leave us wondering is the East African Federation still inevitable?

If the East African Federation was restricted to just its 5 original member states, it could have been very successful, but with the two recent additions of the DRC and South Sudan has shot the federation in the foot, and very hard at that.

Without the DRC and South Sudan, I think the state could be very possible and actually a good idea for economic development. But with these two states having much to gain and little besides natural resources to contribute, the EAF hampers its ability to develop economically and project regional power.

Why did they even decide to add the Conco and South Sudan? I mean it could work if they were in some sort of associated orbit but I can't see it happening anytime soon if they want to fully integrate them.

I see the union forming if they stick to the old countries cause South Sudan and DRC are just too unstable to be a functional state of their own. The rest of the nations are pretty stable with no notable ethnic or religious tension but dont think have that resource to stabilize DRC and South Sudan. Wish them the best though.

the DRC being in federation would be very stupid. There's no government authority outside of Kinshasa. Effectively all the east african nations would be wasting their money trying to subdue warlords in the congolese jungle.

It's potential is immense, but the drc was a latest addition and has big powder keg potential as well. Nairobi and Arusha may be able to right the ship though, the EAF's population demographics would be the best in the world.

The EAF will not last if it keeps the DRC due to the rapport between the development of the country and the stability of it (and also the population). With the South Soudan it can be manageable tho it would fragilize the Union.

The best option would be a multiple times solution : the original EAF and an increasing cooperation between this EAF and South Sudan and the DRC.

The EAF had already enough with the addition of South Sudan, it shouldn't have the DRC

if they were to go ahead with the original members first, and only after becoming stable and strong integrate the newer members, it would be quite viable.

I'm rooting for it. If the US got involved in trying to help build them up, then that would provide a massive ally in Africa and once they're more stable, hopefully we can leave them to be the US of Africa.
