Sampling Bass Guitar - A Complete Process

Digital audio workstations have all the toys and tricks, and sounds available are better than ever before.

There’s one problem however - individuality.....

If there’s a commercially available set of sounds, then everyone can have them!

In this video, I sample my bass guitar, the purpose of which is to put it on the left hand side of a keyboard, so I can also play chords with the other hand, the keyboard having been split into two MIDI channels.

I describe in detail the first two notes, but not the other 23 notes, as it’s a simple repeat process.

0:00 introduction

1:06 preliminary processes, setting levels, tuning, etc.

3:44 recording preparation, number of samples to be recorded and the dB scale

4:40 open E string recording and discussion

8:23 1st fret F sampling

13:12 editing the 25 tracks (25 notes sampled in all), and trimming/preparing files for export

17:05 exporting files and testing the first three notes, E, F and F# in the sampler

19:45 Connecting keyboard up to test the whole 25 note range. Tweaking release time for realistic sound.

If I understand this correctly, you have to record every single note on the bass fretboard at least three times, at different volume levels, and perhaps with different attacks, and releases as well. ?? This would be time & labor intensive.

Awesome. I don't have Logic Pro but I do have an iPad and have been experimenting with the sampler in GarageBand IOS, and also an app called Chameleon sampler. I'm going to steal shamelessly from your video to make my samples better 😊. Thanks Dan!

Good morning Dan. I’m currently struggling to find some piano music for the Only fools and horses closing theme tune, so I can learn it myself. I saw you play the theme on garage band only (very impressive by the way) and wondered if you had the music for it on the piano? I did leave a comment on that video but haven’t had a response yet, so I thought I’d come here to a more recent video. Any help would be much appreciated!
