Honestly I think people like to come up with all these rules and then retroactively they attribute a more positive experience to that specific change. It's just music or podcasts at the end of the day. Some runs I'll do without headphones, some with, and honestly can't say it has a massive impact.

If I’m outdoors I raw dog most runs. In the gym different story, the music is dire so I need my own blasting into my eardrums

Game changer this, tried it at the start of the year and haven't gone back, so much better being present in the run/surroundings and I find the km's just melt away

I always run without headphones. Helps me focus on my breathing, cleaner headspace and keeps my pace in check

I never liked listening to music while running so I don’t do it. I either run or I am listening to music. 🤷‍♂️

Done my last two long runs without headphones and really enjoyed it actually.

I like to catch up on podcasts/some youtube on easy effort runs. Harder effort I take them off.

Also, headphones make you an easy mark for rattlesnakes, feral pit bulls, pumas, bears, two-legged threats.

I’ve always preferred to run without headphones that’s way I can hear my surroundings

Day to day life without earphones is much better (in my opinion) than living every day with earphones. Nothing external to keep you going, only mental. And there’s a lot of power in silence+ solitude.

First non-bot comment! I'll report em for you. No headphones is a great way to seek discomfort for sure, after a while I start to enjoy the sloshing of water in my camelback mixed with the sound of my pulse and slightly labored breathing. More than that, you get a better awareness of your surroundings (either cars or birdsong) and the sound of gravel crunching under your feet or the slap of your shoes on the pavement can be a great way to make sure you're keeping a good cadence.
