iPhone 8 and 8 Plus first look

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus look pretty much the same as their predecessors, but they have a new back cover that’s coated in glass and gives them a somewhat fresher look. The iPhone 8 will start at $699 for a 64GB model, while the 8 Plus will start at $799 for 64GB of storage. Both models will also have larger 256GB models, for as yet unannounced prices. Both phones will be available for preorder starting Friday, September 15th, with a release date a week later on September 22nd.

Why do these phones exist? It seems like they're just cheaper, less exciting tack-ons to the iPhone X. They're cheaper, I guess, but there's no reason the X needs to be that expensive. 
Plus, their existence make the iPhone line-up way more complicated than it needs to be. There are now 8 iPhones on offer from Apple. It be so much better if it was just 3 variants- small medium and large, and older versions for people who want a cheaper deal.
