TEHRAN Iran's Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei performs prayer for victims of helicopter crash that killed Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi.
Tens of thousands of Iranians gathered on Tuesday to begin the three-day funeral ceremonies for President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash on Sunday night.
The somber procession began in the northwestern city of Tabriz, where Raisi and his entourage were headed before their helicopter crashed on a fog-covered mountainside in East Azerbaijan province of the country. Mourners, adorned with Iranian flags and portraits of the late president, solemnly followed a lorry carrying the coffins of Raisi and his seven aides, paying their respects to the fallen leaders.

Reporting from the capital, Tehran, Al Jazeera’s Resul Serdar said on Tuesday that funeral ceremonies for Iranian state dignitaries occur over “an extended period of time in several locations”.
After the procession in Tabriz, the bodies of Raisi, 63 and Amirabdollahian, 60, will be transferred to Tehran for another ceremony.
On Wednesday, a larger ceremony will take place in Tehran, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei expected to lead the prayers and foreign dignitaries in attendance.
Raisi’s body will then be taken to Mashhad, the country’s second largest city located in the northeast, where he had been born and raised.
