JD Vance, the Republican vice-presidential nominee, has defended comments he made describing leading Democrats as “childless cat ladies” who are unfit to lead.

“Obviously it was a sarcastic comment. People are focusing so much on the sarcasm and not on the substance of what I actually said,” Vance told the conservative media personality Megyn Kelly on her talk show.
