I remember when this paper came out. The three surviving authors of the original nuclear winter paper (RIP Sagan) wrote it around when India and Pakistan got armed. This is when I started wondering if the entire idea had been propaganda from day 1. There's been a lot of junk science published in even good journals lately (replication crisis), and this is exactly the kind of subject where there will be social pressure not to check their work too hard.

I agree with the sceptics, setting of 100 nuclear bombs or 100 large fires, there is undoubtedly more large fires than that in the world every year anyway, so I can’t really see how it would cause 2 billion deaths but maybe people supported The paper as it is over estimation might help prevent a nuclear war, rather than fully believing in the likelihood of it being realistic

its an overestimation, smoke settles quicker than they thought. but still horrifying. why do we need such weapons?

IMO the only country likely to use them is the one country everyone knows has them but they refuse to acknowledge it.

I don’t really understand how that impact would happen globally. In 1962 between Russia and the US they cumulatively detonated 178 and I don’t remember reading about a global catastrophe.
