There are different modalities of treating acne scars. As far as lasers are concerned, they have become the most effective and the newest modality to treat acne scars. Broadly you can classify these lasers into two different types, non-ablative and ablative lasers. Non ablative lasers deliver light or energy in a particular form to the non-superficial layers of the skin, that is deeper down in the dermis, resulting in collagen remodeling an increase in the extracellular matrix and thereby lifting up the skin, resulting of the decease of the acne scars or atleast step by step decrease in the depth of the acne scars. Ablative lasers use photothermolysis to damage the superficial areas or superficial layers of the skin and thus the newskin that is formed is smoother and thus tighter and this is also used in photoageing and wrinkles . Now acne scars require a multimodal approach, especially in Indian skin which is Type 4 and 5 skin, we have to be very careful about post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. So before staring an acne scar laser therapy, you have to have an extensive or exhaustive consult with your dermatologist. Sit down and plan the down time of each acne laser, there are lot of different types. Fractional, CO2, Erbium –Yag, Nd-Yag, pulse dye, alexandrite laser, Q switched lasers, there are different types which are used. So which type of laser is suitable for you, what are the pulses, the pulse duration, the wavelength and the energy delivered to your particular skin have to be chosen by an experienced dermatologist because it varies for every single patient. There are down times also and these varies according to the types of laser used. The down time for the ablative lasers is more, usually a few days to weeks. For non- ablative lasers, it might be only for a few days as it is not affecting the superficial layer of the skin. So please consult your dermatologist. Sit down and you have to make a tailor made plan, for which laser, how long, how many sessions you will need, what are the effects you can expect and how soon you can expect them, all that have to be worked out according to your schedule as well.
