What happened to the Saxxy Awards? Valve seemingly cancelled these awards out of nowhere and didn’t tell anyone

Thank you for talking about this, it's been a long time since the saxxies were a topic within the TF2/SFM atmosphere. It's a shame too because arguably due to the Saxxy Awards being pretty much cancelled it definitely damaged the SFM community as well since there's no motivation to be wanting to spend a long time making an animated short film. Source Filmmaker is inherently an easy software (due to being free and user friendly) to get in to but also incredibly painful to master (because SFM do be trolling sometimes) Usually the SFM community used to be so alive during saxxy season with the best animators just putting it all out there. Big names such as Nonamesleft, The Winglet, etc.. Those years used to be always magical. The current SFM climate is nowhere near from dead by any means but it definitely misses a bit of that magic the 2012 - 2014 era of SFM used to have. I myself have been in this community for a long time as an animator and enjoyer of SFM content. I can only dream for the saxxies to ever make a full comeback, I'm glad there's insane people out there who still make SFM films to this day and the people who even tried to host a community made saxxy awards. So atleast it's good to know that the SFM community is going nowhere

I really miss the old SFM videos. Seeing so much love put into them, all of the work and effort.



Update: I saw the almost 2 hour long SFM. It was great.

There was a community lead Saxxy award in 21? Darn, everything this decade seems to fly past.

I think a reason is because there was probably a shift of management, as in Gabe really isn't the one making decisions like in the past, and whoever is in charge now saw Saxxy Awards, TF2, SFM, and whatever game/ project a waste of resources.

TF2 has been responsible for a lot in my life. The Saxxy Awards were the big motivator for me to look into SFM and eventually start animation as my career. My now wife and I were shy to each other in school, but we finally broke the ice in 2fort. I ran a popular TF2 blog on Tumblr for a number of years that had me introduced to a lot of great people and a lot of great friends. I've been hearing that TF2 is dying but I sincerely don't want it to. This game is a treasure. This game means too much to me.

You know what valve reminds me of - being unemployed you have all the time and freedom but yet at the end of you have not deadlines or organisation, no pressure to do anything. Eventually you lose touch on really and nothing gets done….

when the saxxy awards came out, it was such a cool community building experience.

I miss the Saxxys so much. It was a gateway into animation for me. It was such an awesome community event that really made Valve seem like they cared. It's so weird to me that SFM2 released and then... nothing?
Imagine taking for granted a community that loves and supports your company whole heartedly and then leaving with no word. The animations I saw every year just got better and better, and it's so sad to see that community be abandoned.

As fun as the saxxys were, its safe to say that SFM is pretty much abandon ware at this point as it hasn't had any new updates in a while like porting over of new models, bug fixes, new features, etc. the program had become a complete product in valve's eyes (even though it's labelled as beta for whatever reason). But a good reason for why they might have put the saxxys on hold is because of source 2 filmmaker which isn't out as a standalone software yet but it's a safe bet that s2fm pretty much rendered classic sfm as obsolete because sfm is a direct upgrade which lacks a couple of features that sfm has but it's actually being developed on so I'd reckon that the saxxys will continue once s2fm is out for public use as a standalone software rather than being bundled in with half life alyx. but that's just my guess

I honestly think they were pretty awesome, but, yknow, valve clearly doesn't want/has the time to work on a 15 year old game anymore since they're 100% working on other projects that they consider actually important such as bew hardware, vr headsets, half life 3 (hopefully 🙏🙏) and yeah. I think the community would appreciate the saxxy awards coming back but yeah, here we are.

Honestly all this attention grabbing from valve is a worthless struggle, those assholes could make the game completely unplayable or shut everything down including their servers and the community will just pick it back up from the dust. The community won't let Tf2 die ever.

The years when Saxxys were around was amazing. I don't have a real theory of why they were cancelled. But I remember that it kinda was always an eyeroll when they were done because there were so many people who were new and old coming in and showing what they've got, but always get outshined by the same winners over and over again from previous years.
