Germany's abandonment of nuclear energy may be its greatest error of this decade.

As a politically interested German, let me explain. Our national sentiment is strongly anti-war, we have been at the centre of 2 world wars that caused millions of deaths and completely ruined the German economy and society twice. We are done with war and even small (compared to an all out war) scale military interventions are hugely unpopular. Even during the anti ISIS coalition Germany only provided intelligence data, weapons and economic support. This reluctance towards armed conflict is, as said, on one hand side a result of the carnage experienced during WW1 and WW2 and on the other side a result of how the allied powers shaped the new German state after WW2. Initially Germany was to be a demilitarized state and the Bundewehr was not formed for another 10 years after WW2. Our constitution (which was heavily influence by the understandable allied desire to not have another war with Germany) explicitly states that the Bundeswehr is intended as a purely defensive Army. The strong anti war stance in our society has also been fostered by the allies after WW2 in their efforts to stamp out German militarism which they saw as the root of the 2 world wars. I think its a bit unfair to criticize Germany as being too pacifist after deliberately shaping the post war Germany and its people to be a pacifist anti-militarist state. Yes Germany needs to leave the past behind it at some point and act more decisively on the global stage but I think its a big hypocritical from a world that was still worried about a unified and re-armed German state in 1991 to now expecting Germany to lead the charge into a possible new major war.
Of course CaspianReport is right when he says the soft stance of the German gvmt towards Russia is mainly out of economic interest but its also the case that military actions are hugely unpopular among the German general public. Plus gas is as expensive as it ever was and another huge hike in Gas prices or even energy shortages would not go down well with the general public either...
It is also worth remembering that Russia/the USSR have glorified the victory over Germany in the "Great Patriotic War" and have celebrated that occasion with huge parades all over the country on every 9th of May for the past 75+ years and that victory over Germany has become one of the corner stones of Russian national sentiment. Its quite possible that significant German involvement in this crisis might just allow Putin to increase popular support for war by spinning a sort of "look people of the motherland, the Germans are against us again, do you remember what your grandparents died for?" story.
I wouldnt say Germany is on the fence since we are very much in favour of democracy and self determination for Ukraine. Its more like walking on a razors edge with pitfalls on either side....

This video didn't age well. Germany might really tried to ressist involvment but this is not just about Ukraine not, it's about the western world.

I think you guys should make a part 2, where you address all the parts that have changed already

The economic pressure goes both ways though. Germans may fear losing 1/3 of their energy sources, but the prospect for Russia is giving up billions of monthly revenues AND fighting an expensive war at the same time

As of yesterday, Germany authorized the Netherlands to send German equipment to Ukraine as well as sending 1000 Panzerfaust and 500 Ground-To-Air Missiles

0:55 German here. I’d also like my government to do more for Ukraine, but this accusation is outrageous. He have never been an Ally of Russia, we were the second largest financial support of Ukraine (after the US).

Abandoning nuclear power was a mistake on the part of Germany. It was a bad decision for the environment but in terms of military security, it is a potentially disastrous decision.

I love how YEARS ago you spoke of natural gas across Ukraine and how this will turn into a crisis that it is today. Wicked. Love the info. Appreciate your hard work brother.

Germany has been vocal about their support for ukraine from the start. The only reason there were no weapon transports was the fact that germany had assured after ww2 to not deliver weapons to countries that stand in conflict with Russia. Yesterday was a huge day over here, because german leadership decided to - for the first time in forever - supply weapons.
Also the Pipeline deal has been halted and it is questionable if it will ever be picked up again.
Germany stands with ukraine as it has done from the start. Our leadership has hoped for deescalation. It failed. Germany has a deep rooted guilt as we all know, especially when it comes to russia. It was a hard decision to make, though I hope the world by now knows which side Germany stands with.

Something that blew me away was look at how much nuclear power France uses, I think it's 74% of their energy. This means unlike other countries the inflation of electricity prices wasn't that much

One aspect that is always overlooked, however, is that Russia in return relies on the money it earns from the sale of gas. So the dependency goes both ways.

I'd rather suffer high energy costs than not offer help to humans that need it.
Edit: I'm not saying send troops there, I'm saying do more than we are doing right now.

Germany here: Fortunately this standpoint has now changed and I am happy about it. The problem is: There are MANY Germans heating their homes with gas that will have to pay the receipt for this.

Well well well, who’s changed their mind? As i write this, Germany has announced that they will send 1000 anti armour missiles and 500 anti aircraft “Stinger” missiles to Ukraine in addition to abandoning the nord stream 2 pipeline. Who would’ve thought? Not you
