How many songs can speak to us like "The ghost of Tom Joad"?
A monument of literature (The John Steinbeck's novel, "Grapes of Wrath"), a part of history of the United States while at the great depression, the tragedy the people leaving their farms and homes and running away from the sand storms to try to reach their dream place - California to give hope and future to their children... Eventually “welcomed” as Okies – “people of a lesser importance”.
Once again, about 80 years since that chapter of history, things haven’t changed much in the world. We are in awe watching the tragedy of the people fleeing war zones or places without hope, looking for a place amongst the societies that harvest and take advantage most of Earth richness and wealth to give their children a better future.

Thank you for this music !!!

Springsteen gave this song it's humility when he wrote it. Morello set free its fury.

The best version of this song. I put all 3 versions and the Rage of the Machine version in my Bruce playlist. Thanks for the upload!

No home no job no peace no rest. Where there's somebody fightin' for a place to stand, a decent job or a helpin' hand, where there's somebody strugglin' to be free, look in their eyes ma, you'll see me.

The song tells its own history, sung by the great BOSS.

It's a massive risk taking one of your best songs and giving it a revamp but it's Bruce of course and it is therefore brilliant.

Men walking 'long the railroad tracks
Going someplace, there's no going back
Highway patrol choppers coming up over the ridge
Hot soup on a campfire under the bridge
Shelter line stretching 'round the corner
Welcome to the new world order
Families sleeping in the cars in the southwest
No home, no job, no peace, no rest

Well the highway is alive tonight
But nobody's kidding nobody about where it goes
I'm sitting down here in the campfire light
Searching for the ghost of Tom Joad

He pulls a prayer book out of his sleeping bag
Preacher lights up a butt and he takes a drag
Waiting for when the last shall be first and the first shall be last
In a cardboard box 'neath the underpass
You got a one-way ticket to the promised land
You got a hole in your belly and a gun in your hand
Sleeping on a pillow of solid rock
Bathing in the city's aqueduct

Go!

Well the highway is alive tonight
Where it's headed everybody knows
I'm sitting down here in the campfire light
Waiting on the ghost of Tom Joad

Now Tom said, "Mom, wherever there's a cop beating a guy
Wherever a hungry newborn baby cries
Where there's a fight against the blood and hatred in the air
Look for me, Mom, I'll be there

Wherever somebody's fighting for a place to stand
Or a decent job or a helping hand
Wherever somebody's struggling to be free
Look in their eyes, Ma, and you'll see me"
Yeah!

The highway is alive tonight
Where it's headed everybody knows
I'm sitting down here in the campfire light
With the ghost of old Tom Joad

This is terrific. I see some criticism because of the politics on U Tube, but he has always been a man of the left with somethin to say, What are right wingers doin listening to him anyway ????

This is the question that is raised upon news (as revealed in an interview with the New York Times)
that Bruce Springsteen had never read 'The Grapes of Wrath'
when he wrote and recorded the song/album “The Ghost of Tom Joad, ”
named after the central character of the John Steinbeck novel.
