Little Richard asked my mother to dance back in the fifties, at the armory in Durham, North Carolina. He and his band were on a break from their set. He was walking around enjoying the evening and saw my mother and asked her for a dance. Here’s the f’ed up thing about it. Since he was a black man and she was white, it was the fifties and in the south. She declined even though she wanted to dance with him. She was scared of the repercussions that might ensue. Now that’s just messed up. She always told me she regretted not being able to dance with him for fear of what might happen to her and or him. That’s just so messed up. And sad. No one should live in a world where our thoughts go like that.
