WHAT IS EUTROPHICATION? | DLETTERS
Eutrophication is a phenomenon of water pollution. It is generally observed in closed-water bodies such as lakes, ponds, deeply recessed bays, etc. Phosphorus compounds such as phosphates, ammonium salts, nitrates, nitrites from gas and coke plants, wool processing industries, etc. are usually considered nutrient sources that are essential for the growth of phytoplankton and algae. These primary organisms with favourable water temperature and optimum supply of organic substances, and nutrient salts, grow and form colonies that become too vigorous and ultimately change the surrounding aquatic ecosystem. Eutrophication of water bodies is common and if favourable conditions prevail it slowly proceeds to natural and unpolluted water bodies. The process of eutrophication occurs quite fast and causes colouring and smelling of the water, unfit for human consumption, and destroys other aquatic flora and fauna.
