Higher education in India faces several deep-rooted problems. Many universities focus on rote learning rather than critical thinking, leaving students with degrees but not real-world skills. Outdated curricula, lack of research funding, and poor industry-academia linkages make graduates less employable. There's also a massive quality gap—while a few elite institutions excel, most colleges struggle with infrastructure, faculty shortages, and low academic standards.

Corruption, donation-based admissions, and over-commercialization further erode trust in the system. For India to truly benefit from its demographic dividend, higher education needs urgent reforms focused on innovation, skill development, and equitable access.

Even PhD graduates in India are applying for peon jobs — a shocking reality that highlights the deep crisis in the country’s higher education system. Despite years of academic effort, many students find themselves unemployed or underemployed, reflecting the growing gap between education and employability.

One of the major problems is the lack of skill-based learning. Most colleges rely heavily on rote memorization instead of encouraging critical thinking or innovation. While top-tier institutions thrive, the majority suffer from outdated curricula, poor infrastructure, and unqualified faculty. In some cases, PhD supervisors exploit students by making them do household chores instead of focusing on research.

The situation is worsened by a network of education agents who loot families in the name of getting them into prestigious colleges. Fake degree scams have also emerged, where unsuspecting students are sold worthless certificates with no real value in the job market.

Over-commercialization, donation-based admissions, and corruption have eroded trust in the system. Without urgent reforms in quality, regulation, and accountability, India’s higher education risks failing an entire generation.

Parents should stop telling their children that 10th, 12th pass kar liya uska baad maze hi maze hain, IIT join kar liya uske baad life set hai, IAS ban jao life is easy after that

The problem is not revising the syllabus and using the same 1980s instruments and topics which are not even used today. Just impractical education which is of no use in todays evolving world.

That system was created during a time when the population was much smaller, and there was a need to train people to become workers. But now, there are more than enough people available to fill those roles.

I don't understand why govt made PhD compulsory for teachers when colleges don't have basic facilities. A lot of my faculties got FARSI degree

I am an M tech student in an NIT. I completely agree with the video and this is the truth of phD in India. Even my classmates who are very interested in phD and are some of the most talented people who can contribute to society are opting for PhD in other countries. Research-oriented people today are going away from the country due to the lack of a competitive salary, no future in R&D, only in Academia and the lack of guidance. Even publishing a paper in a journal also sometimes require money from their own pocket and that demoralises them. Private sector should invest more money in R&D and create jobs for PhD scholars. This is the only way

I graduated from IIT, around my third year the lab finally got an earthquake table for testing the earthquake design using simulation, they applied for that table around 5 years ago and that was approved but for the 1st gen table when the best was a 4th gen table already on the market, this is the reality in one of the best colleges, there are a lot more issues. Administration is pathetic and there is rampant discrimination. To be a professor in IITs u cannot graduate from PHD in India, they need to have come from US and other top college, even if u have worked on some of the best research topics. The best students will never choose the PHD in India as there are better colleges that have way better research capabilities, and great supervisors. Some professors have huge ego and there is rampant bureaucracy in research, professor would steal their phds research and only allow them to publish when they are the main author even though they don't even audit the research properly. These are just some of their issues and there are a lot more

It reminds me one of my school lab story, there was no missing instruments, but old & only two microscope for 40 students in biology lab...
It takes too much time to use for all students but period has limited time...
Then one of our lab teacher told us, if some of us do any great job in future they can donate some instrument...
He said it in funny way, but I still remember it, and noticed it has deep meaning...
After many years I was out of school & went there for sign of HM on documents, noticed the HM office was renovated in top class office room... but don't know if the class rooms or LABs doing any better...!!!

Recently in west bengal 30, 000 high school teachers lost their job...here from 2016 there is no new teacher recruitment as the govt spends extravagant amount of money on freebies and minority fund.

regarding Patents, I would like to add that neither the govt nor institutions are interested in patents for Indian product or individual. For eg. I remember bio-diesel from jatropha plant that was discovered by an Indian in Tamil Nadu I guess and the govt denied any fuel of such kind and labelled that person as a fraud. Later, the same bio diesel was discovered by and American and patented. Historical examples are numerous laws in physics and mathematics..naming them here, would be debatable. But just for an eg, fibonacci series was founded in India..

My father is a Professor and researcher and yes this is very true. Even for patent, he have to pay by his own money. For Publication also they have to pay by his own

The difference between india and other countries is that we get a degree to do a job. Not to learn and increase knowledge to become a better person.

The primary concern is industry collaboration, which is hindered by the lack of research conducted by both domestic and foreign companies in India.
