Florida State football had one of the worst losses in recent memory when it fell to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks by a score of 20-17.

The game culminated in a last-second touchdown for the Gamecocks but that was only a microcosm of the game as a whole. Throughout the game, costly mistakes and lackadaisical play haunted the Seminoles as they could never really gain traction.

Blame for this outcome has been littered around ranging from the playcalling to the personnel decisions to the effort given on the field. At the Triple Option, we think that there is only one place to go to find the answers: the film.

This week Adam and Kevin give their thoughts on (what started as) a live mailbag episode that ends with a deep dive through every major play in Saturday’s game.

This was a wild game with wild implications on the future of this program. Make sure to give your thoughts on what you saw from the film and the best steps this staff can make to move in a positive direction for the next game.

FANTASTIC JOB!!! Thank you both for taking the time to break this down and to highlight how close and how far away we are from getting things back to where it should be for FSU. Love that neither of you held back on your analysis. Thanks again for such an amazing job!!!

Jermaine is the ideal player. Crazy talented, impressive hustle, experience at a place no one wants to go to (last chance u) but also at a HIGH level (UGA). And he's a perfect interviewee. Our team needs to emulate him as much as possible.

We won 3 games last season & didn’t play Clemson or Florida. We just lost to a FCS school. Please explain to me how these coaches are doing everything right when the results are worse?

Great breakdown. So, our game plan was to run the same offensive pass play all game long, the same defense all game long. Literally, that was the game plan. For the most part, I'm not even really against that. The problem, though, is that our players are not good enough nor disciplined enough to do that. We couldn't sustain drives when JSU gave us 5 yard hitches all game long. Penalties & drops. Then in the few 3rd & short situations, we got blown up. On the flip side, defensively we ran man to man all game, yet we messed up the concept. I'll repeat: WE MESSED UP THE MAN TO MAN CONCEPT at crucial times. Their DB's were better than our WR's, & their WR's were better than our DB's.

I thought people were exaggerating when they said Destyn Hill would be our best receiver day 1; I'm convinced those people were right. Hill was the better prospect between him & McClain, and McClain is our best receiver as of today (I was a big McClain fan last recruiting cycle). Further, Ja'khi Douglas is our leading receiver on the year because he can take the top off, but instead we gave Helton EVERY rep even after he dropped the ball the only time he actually got open. Also, please get Williamson more burn; I don't know what kind of route runner he is since we only run screens for him, but he shows burst after the catch, and I don't think he's dropped a ball thrown his way. McClain, Williamson, & Douglas are our 3 best receivers today.

Brownlee & Jay are our best CB's. Knowles is right there, maybe ahead of them, actually. I'm not sure we have anybody else. Also, where is Demorie Tate? We simply have too many weak links and playing man exposes them. Not that we're coached up enough to play zone or actually pattern match.

Don't make too much of this. I am a Clemson fan and in 2016 we barely slipped by Troy. We played just like FSU did. They were playing in their Super Bowl and we were practicing. These programs are closer than people think, being loaded with some good transfers. I don't expect the same effort against Wake. That program won't have players to match up with FSU, but, they are excellently coached and always prepared.

They need to run some fumble recovery drills.... there's no reason why no.7 should be tripping no.23 on that return.... that should have been a score....

This was excellent. Great job guys. Love the point about not running great routes - been an issue for years. Coaching.

On the final play, there were at least two wasted defenders on underneath routes that made no sense. They have this backer lined up about six yards off the ball; for what? Is he spying the QB? If so, why? He has 59 yards to cover, so even if he ran, there would be plenty of defenders to bring him down, before he got too far. He's not on the back, b/c the second the ball's snapped, he's looking outside to the number three, I'm assuming to wall him off. So, placing him there wasted a defender, b/c he's on an underneath route that wasn't going anywhere in the first place. Why not put a nickel to help out?

The SS on the near hash dropped down on number two for some reason, and it allowed the number one to have space to run. In 2 man under, the corner's job should be to funnel the number one inside, since he has over-the-top help. He did his job, but b/c the SS dropped down, the free had to come from across the field to help, and it led to the bad angle he took on the receiver. If anything, they should've been in a two-deep stack. At least that way, they could seal the MoF w/out the need for an underneath backer, and have over-the-top help w/ a free, so it essentially becomes a man free look

The other problem was, the SS gave up on the play. He was running at a slow jog on the field, while the play was still going. If he had kept running, hypothetically he could have brought the receiver down, when he cut back to avoid the corner/free, who both overplayed him. You can see that he pulls up at around the 37-yard-line (1:12:12), slowly jogs down to the 18-yard-line (1:12:17), and when he realizes that the receiver cuts back, he picks up the pace. However, by the time the receiver cross the goal line, the SS has closed the gap to the five-yard-line (1:12:21). If he had kept running, he had a legitimate shot to make that play.

They had 12 player on the field and still almost got scored why did FSU pull Corbin....

The reason Adam Fuller needs to go is because the stupid mistakes our corners, safeties and linebackers make on an every game, multiple times a game basis should be coached out of them after they make the mistake once. Add to that the horrible 3rd and 17 play call, that will haunt my dreams forever, and the ending play call in this game and it seems like Fuller 1. can't teach discipline and 2. gets caught up in this "aggressive" defense when the game calls for something more conservative.

Poor clock management on the last drive. On first down, Milton takes the snap with 17 seconds left on the play clock, on 2nd with 6 seconds, on 3rd with 5 seconds. Then JSU calls timeout. Could have wasted at least 20 seconds more off the clock. And keeping Milton on the field on that 3rd down is just plain stupid. You mean to tell me that it wouldn't have been better to have a FB or another TE out there?

Great breakdown. I couldn't articulate it, but I knew when I was watching it that it was disgusting on many fronts. I haven't missed any games these past several bleak years, but another one like that and I'm spending my Saturdays elsewhere.

Mike put himself in a pretty nasty position using the game as a live scrimmage. That being said, he as well as his players have the chance to recover with Wake and Louisville wins. I don't think its right to judge a coach in his entirety off of one major misjudgement but it is right to hold everyone accountable. GO NOLES.

It doesn’t appear to me that Norvell and staff are scheming around the talent they have. They’re instead trying to fit the players they have to the schemes they have always used. Aggressive defense with constant man coverage seems to not be our secondary’s strength. I wish Fuller would give safer zone schemes a try. At least, until our young secondary gets better at man coverage.
