Israel's military faces fierce fighting against Hamas in Gaza

A Hamas delegation is travelling to Egypt to negotiate the details of a ceasefire agreement that could end the war in Gaza, even as Binyamin Netanyahu vowed to press ahead with the offensive until the militants are destroyed.

The talks are in an advanced stage and mediators led by Qatar and Egypt believe an agreement could be reached soon. The ceasefire would take place in three stages over several weeks, involving the exchange of Israeli hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners in Israel.

A previous ceasefire in which Hamas exchanged dozens of hostages for Palestinian prisoners ended with a resumption of the fighting in Gaza. But mediators hope that this ceasefire could give momentum to political talks on managing Gaza and a political resolution to the Palestinian-Israel conflict, one source familiar with the talks said.
