It’s best to hire a guide to visit Mount Bromo. More than a thousand guides take tourists up in jeeps every day to a sunrise viewpoint.
We waited a couple hours for the thick fog to lift, then stuck around to watch the clouds roll over the volcanos, including Mount Semeru.
After sunrise, the guide will bring you to to the base of Mount Bromo, inside Indonesia’s Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.
You can hike up to the crater's rim, or take a horse much of the way.
The final staircase to the rim is 200 Steps.
Those are fumes, mostly sulfur dioxide, which will make you choke or gag.
There’s a seismograph at the top, which measures the rumbles below the volcano and delivers a warning. It last signaled in 2015, before an eruption shut the area, and air traffic down.
The guides say the summer crowds are huge, so according to them the best months to visit Mount Bromo are May or after the summer visitors leave in September.
