My headcanon: Harry was an amazing teacher for DA, Harry got a taste of teaching and didn’t like it. He is one of if not the most powerful wizards of that time. He defeated a fully grown basilisk AS SECOND YEAR. He also bested one of the most powerful dark wizards of all time before graduating from hogwarts. Because of these feats of strength it makes total sense for him to become an Auror instead of a teacher. People also forget the Ministry needed a hero’s support or someone well known because the wizarding world lost faith in the ministry because of its failures.

My head cannon: Harry, Ron, and Neville all became Aurors because they wanted to catch any death eaters or death eater supporters that got away and make sure they did their time. Slowly they got tired/run down and moved on to calmer professions. Ron went to help George at the joke shop, Harry and Neville became professors. Not all at the same time but one by one.

My biggest gripe with him not ending up a professor at Hogwarts is that throughout the entire series it's stated that the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher had been jinxed since Voldemort was denied the position... so why in the F*** wouldn't you break the jinx with Harry!

Well he isnt just a wizard cop. Like, yeah harry really did help a lot of people with the DA stuff, but the point wasnt to make him a teacher, it was to show that he was capable of organizing people as a leader and stand up against impossible odds to do what is right. Him stepping up as an auror is more akin to becoming a knight of the people rather than a simple cop, especially with the caliber a man like him is. He killed fucking voldemort, has battled dragons and death eaters and trolls and all sorts of things on pretty much a monthly basis while still learning magic as a boy without any backround in the stuff. His support of the ministry prevented the government from collapsing in on itself until it was put in more capable hands like kingsley shacklebolt or hermione granger, and overall his presence as an auror is like a hand of god coming down in the wicked. He isnt really the administrative type, and prefers a hands on approach anyways.

Being an auror wouldn't necessarily mean he couldn't take a mentoring position. You can teach in any job, but you have to be an auror to fight in the front lines against the darkness rising again.
