" Earth Abides" by George R. Stewart...oldie but goldie ! Superb writing and best extrapolation of how things might work out afterwards...

I'd also recommend The Road by Cormac McCarthy

I read Bird Box last year and it haunts me to this very day, I loved the movie adaptation as well! Very excited to read the Night Parade and The Fireman! Thank you for the recs, Rachel! Our horror taste is very similar, so I'll most likely enjoy these books. ☠️📖❤️

The fifth season!! Currently reading it, and it’s filling that hole perfectly

I know many others have suggested this book but I'll chime in anyway: The Girl With All the Gifts. Mainly because it features the same, real-world fungus as the cause of the zombie apocalypse.

I also loved Stephen King's Cell (his only zombie book).

I gotta go old school and thrown Richard Matheson's vampire-apocalypse classic I Am Legend into the ring. (But I'm not sure how it might connect with the video game, though; sorry....)

Adding quite a few of these to-read, but I have to say I just lost my everloving mind, I didn't know Under The Skin was a book! Watched that movie (and subjected several bewildered friends to it) and adored it!

Great recommendations! 🍄 I want to read The Night Parade, Feed, Hell Followed With Us, and The Fireman. I love The Walking Dead comics, Survivor Song, and World War Z. 🧟‍♂️

Thank you for these recommendations! I listened to World War Z on audio and enjoyed it. We started Season 2 of "From" after binge watching Season 1 . It is great!!

Swan Song by Robert McCammon, The Passage by Justin Cronin, and The Girl with All the Gifts by M. R. Carey.

They're all about a post-apocalyptic world where a young girl might hold the key to saving the world, so right in line with The Last of Us.

My favorite Apocalyptic book, written in 1987 by Robert McCammon is “Swan Song”. In it, The world has succumb to a nuclear war. The details of an apocalyptic aftermath are terrifying. The all consuming darkness..the storms..the destruction of life and life ongoing with it’s disastrous effects on the human body itself. There are no zombies…something much more terrifying…humans and what their capable of doing to each other. A young girl with a special ability could be the salvation of the world if she can survive. It’s a masterpiece of storytelling.

The first thing that comes to mind for me is " The girl with all the gifts" I was wondering if Carey was an inspiration for the game. I think he was the first one using cordyceps as the source of infection. I listened to "The Fireman" right after "NOS4A2" and I was disappointed, it reminded me of the TV series living you with a cliffhanger at the end of the season to start another one with miraculous savings of the protagonist at the beginning of the other. There were parts I enjoyed but you could make adleast three descent separate books out of this one, or some short stories collection set in that world.

The girl with all the gifts is very similar to The last of us.

I'm so glad you recommend THE NIGHT PARADE it's my favorite book. I remember telling you to read it a few years ago on a live stream you had before you had read any Malfi

I haven't read it, but The Road by Cormac McCarthy sounds like it would be in the same ballpark. 🧟 Perhaps A Boy and His Dog by Harlan Ellison, which was also a movie.

I have not seen the show yet but I played the game of TLOU back when it came out. Great recs. The Walking Dead and Birdbox were both good too. I'd also recommend The Girl With All The Gifts and one of my person favorites, The Passage trilogy by Justin Cronin. 🧟‍♀️ 🧟‍♂️

Great list thanks! Walking dead is my absolute fave. Kirkman is really passionate about the zombie genre and he really thought out the world and the characters well. Survivor song wasn’t for me personally. It felt a bit rushed. But I agree it’s in that arena of TLOU. I’d also add The Road. Also the broken world book that you recommended on another video also helped scratch that itch for me. I’ve heard the passage is amazing too so want to read that this year. Anyway sorry long msg this is one of my fave genres so I get excited! Haha.

We may be the ONLY people who haven't watched The Last of Us. We don't have HBOMax/HBO...so will get around to it...when we churn toward that streaming service.

Marie and I read Bird Box, and saw the movie...and loved them both. As you know, I'm not a horror fan (while Marie is), but for some reason I really love dystopian stories.

I love The Road (another walking dystopian story) and The Stand (which I was surpised to have read during the middle of the Pandemic. It was oddly cathardic.

Thanks for the recommendations. I own both The Fireman and World War Z, I just now have to pick them up.

The Night Parade seems a LITTLE too close to horror for my takes, but maybe Marie can read it first...and see if it would be something that I'd enjoy.

Lastly, The Feed by Mira Grant seems interesting, too...but I know that she's more of a horror writer...so I may wait on Marie's opinion on whether I'd enjoy it or not.

Thanks for this video. Always a lot of fun hearing your thoughts on these books.
