‘If you ever write my biography, do not forget to write that finally, I got older dreaming…’
— Nikolaos Gyzis.
On this day, March 1st, 1842, Nikolaos Gyzis was born in Sklavochori, Tinos. His artistic talent was evident from a young age, as he meticulously copied lithographs, earning admiration from those around him.
Gyzis became one of Greece’s most important 19th-century painters and a leading figure of ‘The Munich School,’ a movement rooted in academic realism. In 1882, he was appointed professor at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts but remained deeply connected to his Greek heritage. His work ranged from portraits and still lifes to grand allegories and religious themes, foreshadowing the Jugendstil movement.
To celebrate his birthday, we highlight Nymph and Eros (1897), from the Greek Collection of the A. G. Leventis Gallery.
