If you're looking for the key to recording solid vocals and getting clean vocals every time, I'm going to give you exactly what you need in this video.

Too many times have I seen beginner engineers destroy their clients vocals by making this one simple mistake, that can be resolved in a matter of minutes.

Of course using great hardware such as a quality preamp and microphone will always make way for improving the overall quality of your vocals. Even then, following these steps will guide you to recording solid and clean vocals every single session.

The goal of an audio engineer is to give the client exactly what they came to pay you for... Quality Recording. As long as you are giving them quality recording, they will know, that when it comes time to getting the song mixed and mastered, they will be able to get the best mix and master possible.

As a mixing engineer, there's nothing worse than someone bringing me a session, and the vocals have been destroyed during the recording session. It limits the quality that I'm able to provide when it comes to Mixing their song.

With the VERY simple steps provided in this video, you are guaranteed that the vocals you record in every session, are going to be exactly where they need to be.

No more destroying Vocals!!

I use a FocusRite and make sure to keep the loudest of each recording just under the peak by a few db. I end up in this same position where I can't bring the vocals up any more, and need to bring everything else down just as you suggested.
In the end, the total mix is low and there's not enough room to raise it up where it needs to be. For example when you import a comparison track from a major artist and it's much louder than yours. So I end up forced to add a volume boost effect which I assume isn't the best option. Any suggestions?
