I love going small race with mounted combattent to ride my squishies. "Forwards my monk steed, don't let the paladin have all the fun". Favorite is a small Dhampir in zealot or AG barbarian or is you don't weigh much berserker "run me overthere hotchick hyaa hya" than you don't car about the speed reduction.

I would say that power of Barbarian is dealing consistent good dmg and surviving long on front lines.
Yea rogue will deal Xd6 but Barbarian with Great Weapon Master and Rage can deal 10+(2 or 3 or 4) dmg Per Hit and with Reckless Attack it most likely going to hit.
And on 20th lvl Barbarian negates Great Weapon Master debuff thanks to feature giving +4 STR above 20, which means +2 to hit and dmg, plus +4 CON which is +40 HP.
20th lvl Barbarian feature is like ASI * 4, though feat is weaker bc +4 to CON gives better con saves and AC.
And yea GWM is -5 but with just Great Weapon +3 and nothing else you are fine.

People are saying that Barb has avreage dmg, but in my opinion people thinks big amount of dice good dmg, low amount low dmg.
Yea its nice to roll 10d6's or 12d8's but imagine looking at Barb rolling one 1d12 and dealing 31 dmg on avreage from one hit (20th lvl): 7 [STR] + 3 [Weapon] + 4 [Rage] + 10 [GWM] + 7 [AVG 1d12].
And you can even take Aasimar (Protector/Fallen/Scourage) Race for your Zelot Barbarian for better roleplaying and dmg for hard fights.

look, after dying in the first battle of the first session of my first campaign during my first ever time playing, I am more than happy to sacrifice some damage output in return for not dying. Sorcerer/warlock is my beloved, but I like living.

Level 3-5 is a great place to leave barbarian and start levelling a good class, while using the early powergame of the barbarian. It's hard to warrant playing a barbarian over for example a paladin, gloomstalker or bladesinger but the fantasy is good. But I mean my paladin is in a divine rage and hits so hard that the foe takes 2d8 radiant damage on level 2 sometimes. Flavor is free.

Bugbears make for great beast barbarians, although it's hard to beat beasthide shifter, thri-kreen or simic hybrid in terms of tanky AC.

So, I don't think most people play barbarian effectively, and most parties don't properly support them. First off, I think you should dump absolutely everything into your strength, dexterity, and constitution or play a race that lets you dump dexterity preferably a Loxidon. Second, recklessly attack and I mean ungaboonga that crap you don't have the best AC till, and your taking half damage when hit so swing for the fences without regret. Third, don't take to many feats if your going to higher levels. Every class minus fighter gets 5 ASI, and as a barbarian you want to max out your strength and constitution so you need to keep 3 to 4 of those ASI for that express purpose. This is why I advise either skimping not investing ASI in constitution and getting the tough feat, limiting yourself to one or two tops. You can get away with using 4 feats, if you don't invest in constitution, but one of them should be the tough feat, and another needs to be a half feat for strength so choose wisely or be left wanting. However, if you either have rolled for stats, your DM is awesome and gives you ASI plus feats, or you aren't going past level 12 just go ham with the feats you won't regret a thing.
